Women's Shoulder Pads

Recommended Posts

My daughter is looking to get a new set of shoulder pads. Until now she has always played boy's hockey and has always worn boy's shoulder pads. This year she is a midget and will be playing with the girls. We have looked at the Bauer One35, and the Itech Techlite 66. I guess there is also a TPS R10 pad. Is this TPS R10 pad still in production? Are there any other women's pads available? Also, with Bauer buying up Itech are we now down to just one women's shoulder pad available on the market? It is also very difficult to find any kind of information on these pads on any of the manufacturer's websites, and the guys that work the LHS don't seem to know anything about these pads, and obviously have no personal experience with them (at least I hope they don't). I would appreciate any comments from the women players as to if they like wearing women's shoulder pads vs. wearing mens. I would also appreciate any comments on a specific pad as to how they perform.

As a woman i can't stand wearing the women's shoulder pads personally. Right now i am wearing the Bauer 5000 should pads but i am going to get the Farrell shoulder pads. If you LHS actually has some women's ones i would have your daughter try some and see if she does like them. I had the Bauer 50's but i hated them so i think i am def going with the Ferrell's. Hope i helped.

Working in woman's hockey for the last few years and with High Level players some like the woman's pads some don't. However some that didn't also didn't wear ones that did a thing to protect them and always complained when they had a boo boo.......I always said told you so and get back out there. Anyway joking aside. Bauer didn't put them out this year with the line up not sure why?

Easton however did put one out and should be in stores soon. Women for the most part having narrow shoulders do need that smaller shoulder pad with maximum frontal coverage and so far I have found the Bauer's to be the best for the "average size " female if you get my point. However anyone above sized in the frontal area will most likely need to go with a woman's pad. I have seen them online around at different places but most stores are sold out of them completely!

I am beginning to wonder about the whole women's pad situation myself. Bauer doesn't seem to list the One 35 Women's pad in their most current catalog, but I have seen this pad at the LHS. Itech is now out of business, and TPS has the women's pad on their website, but offers no real information about it. My daughter is a little larger up top and she has problems with the boys pads riding up during the course of the game. I figured that a shoulder pad designed for women might help the situation, but I wonder in the future how many options there are going to be. I might look into the Farrell pad, since it is a different construction than the typical men's pad.

Depending on her level of play and where she aspires to go to I would highly recommend the One 75 as it does fir well in that situation and wraps from the bottom so it hold in well in the female situation.

Unless you can get your hands on the old Itech as I found it to be the best fit and protection for most female players.

Coaching Jr A girls last year the majority of the girls that were aspiring to got to college either had the Itech the One 70 or the S17 Easton.

My girlfriend worked with Easton to develop women shoulder pads, from what I heard they should be available late 2009 in stores.

This may not be much help (I hate the usual "you'll have to just try 'em out and see what works for you.." response) but for what it's worth, I play on a women's team and a few co-ed teams, and among the two dozen or so women I play with in various levels and stages of experience, most don't bother with women's pads. I realize your daughter is a lot younger, but I think the decision between men's vs. women's pads, (and even among different models of women's specifically), is going to have a lot to do with her particular build and body shape more than anything else. The few women I know who do wear women's shoulder pads (and actually like them) have pretty large breasts or narrow shoulders or both. That body type makes a lot of men's pads hard to keep on or keep situated because the front panel will simply stick out (not down) or the shoulders are too bulky. Women's pads tend to be a little more streamlined/narrow on the shoulders and often have a curve over the breast bone allowing for the breasts to sit but still returning to the core so it can be strapped in place without making a tent out of the jersey.

That said, I've tried on some women's shoulder pads and hated them.. but I have broader shoulders and a small chest. I have stuck with men's pads and aimed for more streamlined fits to avoid bulk. For the record, pants seem to work the same way: some women like women's pants because they often fit wider hips better and the padding is designed a little differently.. some don't. I, for example, wear women's pants but men's shoulder pads because I have wider hips and short quads compared to most men.

To make a long story short, if a woman has a stereotypically "female" shape up top, she might find more success with women's shoulder pads, below, with pants, and so on. Otherwise, men's pads can do the job just fine and probably even better than women's if you find a pair that fit without being too bulky.

Depending on your daughter's age and whether she is, uh, developing into a... woman... or still pretty boy-ish in her frame, the only real benefit to women's over men's is fit.. and she will be the only one who knows what works best, regardless of specs or technical details to be found on manuacturer web sites and so on.. Hopefully you can get your hands on some stock to actually try on and aren't limited to online shopping?

Which old Itech are you referring to? Would it be the SPW66 Techlite, or the SPW55? I have seen the SPW66 in stores currently, but the SPW55 might be harder to come by.

Thanks,

Mike D.

That would be the latest one the 66 I believe!

my girlfriend wears men's pads and solved the problem of the pads riding up by tieing them down to the belt on her hockey pants with a skate lace.

Many women on my team wear TPS women's shoulder pads. Several including me wear the old TPS 808 women's pad and one woman wears a TPS women's R#? (not the R10) pad. Unfortunately, TPS was sold, so I'm not sure if they're making women's shoulder pads anymore...

Of the women I've talked to, if they're larger up top, they really like the Itech women's pads, and if not, they typically go for the men's pads.

From personal experience, if your daughter is having a problem with mens/boys pads riding up, she's a great candidate for women's pads.

I used to wear mens when I first started playing 10 years ago, but they never stayed where they should, constantly rode up on me. Because of that I once cracked a rib on the 1/2 boards, and also suffered many bruises to my lady bits from butt ends of other players sticks or pucks (defenseman).

Never happens anymore with my Itech pads, they stay in place. Sounds like you may have to hunt around a bit to find a pair for her to try, but seems like it's well worth the extra effort so she actually ends up with pads that do what they should.

Sorry to re-hash an old thread but since CCM came out with the new U+W09 shoulder pads for women, I was wondering if anyone had any experience with them?

I'm currently not wearing shoulder pads because all my Bauer One40's (mens) do are ride up and are uncomfortable. For those women who are *ahem* more endowed, what shoulder pads would you recommend?

seriously I recommend using a skate lace to tie it down. I'm pretty much in the same boat (yes, I know the username is misleading) and even the women's pads would ride up on me. run a skate lace under the front vertically and then tie it to the belt on the pants, no more riding up into your neck.

I used to have the same problem as you with shoulder pad fit. I found that the Warrior shoulder pads tend to run larger than other brands. To fit my shoulders I needed a Men's small, but to fit my chest I needed a Men's Medium which caused issues. Went and tried on the Warrior Projekt (last year's model) and they run larger in the chest so I can wear a Men's small and it fits everywhere. The Projekt series also has the side pads that you can adjust so I dialed it in and riding up, etc. PM me if you want more info.
