It's like this for me: I think of myself as a hockey player. Therefore I abide by the traditions and superstitions and the like no matter how silly that may seem. Yes, I know I'm not in the NHL and most likely won't ever be. But I have the utmost respect for the guys who have won the most storied trophy in sport.

And Chadd, you're completely right. It's sickening, but true.

+1 on everything LkptTiger said.

My views are more in line with JR.

It all depends of your own personal views.

If your belief is that only players that win the cup should touch it, then that is great.

Then that means your daughter, your uncle, or the guy who changes the oil in your care shouldnt touch it either.

They didnt win it.

Or do you believe that those who win it get to choose who touches it? Kind of dilutes the tradition a bit.

Still a fine belief.

Or you can believe that it is just a trophy that can, and does, mean different things to different people. Why shouldnt people be allowed to touch it? It is a trophy, not a Van Gogh. Should there be certain restrictions, maybe with certain things only to be allowed by winning players? Not unreasonable. Also a fine set of beliefs.

And yes, touching the cup is a priviledge and an honor.....what is EARNED is having your name on it. They are two different things.

EDIT: I am not saying any point of view is wrong here. I just feel that one persons set of beliefs shouldnt impede on anothers. If the custodians of the cup feel it is OK for anyone to touch the cup, then I think it is OK. Not everyone needs to subscribe to the superstitions of NHL players. I think the cup belongs to the sport, not the players exclusively. And the sport includes anyone who loves Hockey. If you feel that it is not OK for you to touch it without winning it, thats cool...I respect that. For me? I touched it and ran my fingers over the names of My Canadiens of the 70's that I used to stay up and watch on HNIC as a kid. It was a fantastic moment I will never forget.

A Van Gogh was never earned with blood, sweat, and tears.

You're right, it means different things to different people.

I couldnt disagree more. A Van Gogh was earned with just as much passion and time....just a different type.....and throw in an ear for good measure ;). Plus it is a very fragile item....the cup by comparison is an armored tank.

True. It means different things to different people. Though I may not subscribe to your belief, I certainly respect it and the passion you have for it.

I didn't start playing hockey until I was 20 years old, but I completely side with the no-touching philosophy. I didn't earn the right to hold the greatest trophy in sports, I'm not touching the thing. Honestly, it's apart of my love for hockey. The superstitions and traditions.

Hell, a few months ago I was at a skate class taught by a former Fort Worth Brahmas player. This same year the (now) Texas Brahmas won the Ray Miron President’s Cup (yes it's a mouthful) and this former player that had played for 6 years on the team and never won actually skated away from the Cup. He cited later that he had never won it and did not deserve to be near it. I stand by those sentiments.

Do what you like, I don't judge, but I was thrilled to touch the cup. I get not touching it if you are in the NHL, but for a kid and beer league player, I say touch it. Touched it as a kid and adult, loved it (maybe that's why I am not in the show).

My 6yr old son was at the HOF back in May, and touched it,(my favorite picture of all time), someone asked him why he didn't kiss the cup, he said if you didn't win it, you can't kiss it.

Which comes to my personal rules for the cup

1. Don't Kiss it

2. Don't lift it over your head.

3. Don't let Def Leppard any where near it, and if you see them, kick them in the nuts.

Ininew:

I think those sentiments are very valid for someone who actually has a chance to win it. I dont think those same restrictions should be placed on the average joe/fan. The cup is not only for the team that wins it.....it belongs to the sport as well.... and players of all levels, and the fans, are part of the sport.

That being said, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and I certainly respect, and can understand, yours.

the cup by comparison is an armored tank.

Tell that to Wally Tatomir who cracked the cup when the Canes won.

Read it in context. Compared to a Van Gogh...paint on canvas.....it is an armored tank.
