Heat Bake

Recommended Posts

I just got my skates heat-baked. I knew I shouldn't have, but I did 'cuz one skate was just killing me. Now they are too wide! My foot is just sliding around in there, and it feels like I'm flat-footed or something. No side support. They are top-of the line Missions. Is there anything I can do now, or am I just screwed and have to deal with it?

Take them to a shoe shop (normally in the malls) and look around to see if you can find something to help you out. Sometimes there is additional padding you'll be able to put in to stop blisters. Take a look around it should help, but basically your screwed and left with a skate that doesn't fit well. However these inserts should help alleviate some of the problems.

Did you walk around in them or something? Simply sitting down after baking them shouldn't have caused a major problem with the width.

i did get up and take a few steps, but I sat right back down. This happened to me with CCMs too. They were too tight, got em baked, then boom...too wide. I have a wide foot already. I think Im basically screwed. I could heat them again, but Im afraid they will just get even wider.

Sounds like something is wrong with the way they're being baked. The only way the skates will get that much wider is if there is lateral force applied to them while they are warm.

I had them done for 7 mins just like the box said. Then I put them on, laced them up real tight. Sat in them for like 10-15 mins. Only got up once. Played in them tonight, and no good. My foot was sliding in them front and back, and side to side.

Sounds like someone botched the baking process, that just doesn't happen if done properly. Assuming the skates were fitted properly as well. You need to sit longer than 15 minutes as well, more like 30 for most of the heat to dissipate.

ive heard that the way u pull on the laces can also stretch the boot out. if you pull straight up u are putting pressure on the eyelets. i think the correct way is to pull across your body. also supposed to wait 24 hours before u skate in them.

So your not supposed to go for a little walk? I've always been told to sit still with them on for about 10-15 minutes then they told me to get up and walk around for a while. Maybe this is why my Hi-Hos are so wide, the guy had me skating after about 20 minutes. Just told me to roam the store.

I got them done on Sunday, skated today. Well over 24hrs. Im not sure how he baked them, or placed them in the oven. They were very snug out of the box. My toe was touching the front cap. I like the boot to run a bit small. No pain while skating whatsoever. I think getting up prob wasnt too good. But like I said, I did it with CCMs and had the same fat, wide result haha. Maybe I just have fat, wide feet!

If they were hurting your feet in the first place, you shouldn't have gotten them. If the skate doesn't fit right out of the box, it isn't worth getting them baked, what kind of skates are they?

even if you did standup and walk in them, they should NOT do that.

All of the info I've seen says NOT to walk in them until they're completely cool, and wait 24 hrs before skating in them. That was from the paper work that came with my Pure Fly's. Here's a link to Missions skate bake instructions. If the pro shop didn't follow the instructions and your skates a f'ed up, you might be able to get them replaced. I'd look into it.

the reason your skates are getting wider is becase you have to wait 24-48 hrs befor you use your skates again. also after being baked, leave you skates standing up, no laying on their sides or upside down. those are probly the mistakes you made. also, my friend got his skates baked 2 times to get a good fit.

Baking isn't always required. I never baked mine and I've never had any problems with the fit of mine.

Hmmm, I had both my mission (roller) and 952 baked and they didn't seem to have gotten wider nor longer. I waited for couple days before I skated in them however.

You should have gone to a place with a CCM F-I-T machine where after your skates were baked you would sit with your skates on in the CCM F-I-T machine and it would compress the skates and conform them exactly to your foot.

I didnt walk around in them. I just stood up to make sure my foot was in properly, then I sat right back down. I was in them for about 15-20 mins, not much longer though. I did pull them tight though, and that may have pulled them out wide. I didnt skate on them for well over 24 hours, and I noticed the wideness right away. I couldnt turn sharp or take off quick without my foot coming out of place. Not really sure what went wrong.

I sent them back to Mission, and I have PMed Justin. He said he was gonna look into them for me. Everybody at Mission has been real cool, and the fact that Justin said he is even aware of my situation says a lot about how they run things. Im very happy with them...I just hope I can get them fixed or something, $400 bucks and I may not be able to even use them :( Last time I heat bake anything, I'll just deal with the couple times of pain till they break in.
