Hockey net question

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys

I purchased a steel hockey net and have been finding that Im putting dents into the cross brace, does anybody have a Idea on what I can put around it to protect it? I like to shoot weighted pucks but dont want to have a dented hockey net at the end of the day? I was thinking about the stuff you can put around pipes to insulate them and maybe painting it white??

Any thoughts would be great

Jeremy

PS- this looks like a cool site, this is also my first post

Welcome to msh jeremy, and I suggest styrofoam of some sort, or a lightweight bendable foam. hope this helps, as I use some type of foam around my bars. idk what type I use

styrofoam will be destroyed very quickly. The soft foam pipe insulation, usually black in color and maybe 1/2-3/4 inch thick and made for a specific diameter pipe, will work and is very cheap to replace

yep thats what I did frankie, just went to the local hardware store and picked up a couple for under a dollar. I zipped tied them on im good to go:). Its tears a bit but protects the steel :)

Im shooting pucks in my backyard ( my neighbour is too close to me in the driveway ) and Im shooting off a piece of plexiglass but its starting to crack, does anybody else have a suggestion of something that would be good to shoot off but wont crack?

Thanks again for all the help guys :)

i say you leave the dents. It adds character. I assume you don't want dents because you want your net to look nice. If you want to protect for asthetic reasons, wrapping it with foam won't make it look good either. If you're afraid that the repeated denting of the crossbar will eventually lead to an unusable net, then wrap it.

If you want something more durable than the foam insulation, Summit Racing or Jegs sell foam meant to be wrapped around roll bars in race cars. It won't be anywhere near as cheap but it should hold up longer.

I also used to use metal or steel nets and occasionally put some solid dents in the bars over the years. As ndlancer here recommended, wrap the posts in a light foam to deflect some of the force and you're good to go. You don't get the satisfying ping anymore, but at least it's protected.

Try your local hardware store and pick up some zip ties to put it on with and you're good to go.

Alot of people use squares of HDPE.

I'm not sure about how long they last though.

If the problem is really that bad, you might want to get a larger size diameter size of PVC pipe from your local hardware store. Using a .band saw cut the pipe length wise down the middle, (can be a little tricky and be careful if your not experienced with the saw.) Drill some holes in the pipe to put zip ties through, attach to the face of your goal, and you'll never have any more dents, save the other half of the pipes you split for when the first ones give out, but im sure they will last for along time unless your shot is consistently over 90 MPH. This will act like a shin gaurd for your goal, good luck.

hey there again guys

I found another way today to solve this problem, I saw two pieces of heavy grade steel tubing at work I was able to put them over top of the net tubing and they provide a bullet proof way to protect the net metal. Plus they add weight to the net and sound great when pucks hit them. dont know if I should paint them white or not??
