JR Boucicaut 3803 Report post Posted October 2, 2004 One of the records I never figured anyone would break...
foppa21 0 Report post Posted October 2, 2004 Not to take away anything from what Ichiro has done this season, because it has been an incredible season for him, but you have to take into account that he had more games in which to break than record than Sizzler had when he set it. JR Boucicaut 3803 Report post Posted October 2, 2004 Yes but you also have to take into account that guys probably didn't throw as hard or complex in Sisler's era...
LegoDoom 0 Report post Posted October 2, 2004 Even still, 60 more at bats is a lot.
LegoDoom 0 Report post Posted October 2, 2004 Yes but you also have to take into account that guys probably didn't throw as hard or complex in Sisler's era... And the league is watered down now. Even if pitchers throw harder, really fast fastballs are still easy to hit if they are straight. And nobody throws a screwball in todays game.
Chadd 916 Report post Posted October 2, 2004 There was no such thing as a closer back then either. If the pitcher was tired, he generally stayed in the game and tried to gut it out. Now they bring in a lefty to face a lefty and batters can easily face three different pitchers in a game.Had the coaches in Seattle not tried to change his stance to improve his power he would have easily broken the record in the same number of games. Hitting .250 or so for the first month pretty much also kept him from making a run at .400.
LegoDoom 0 Report post Posted October 2, 2004 So a hitter had to face a good pitcher for 5 plate appearances instead of a fresh, mediocre pitcher for 2? It is reflected in his stats... .354 in innings 1-6 and .408 from the 7th inning on.And he is hitting .404 against lefties... I dont think he cares.
mack 44 Report post Posted October 2, 2004 Yeah but Maris's record still stands.Oops, wrong argument that's impossible to justify either way.
Chadd 916 Report post Posted October 2, 2004 I still think it should go in as a 162 game record in addition to Sisler's 154 game record, don't get me wrong. I figure someone has to throw out some of the other arguements. It's just disappointing that it didn't get anywhere near the fanfare that other records have had.
