Durability issues - busted two skates in store.

Recommended Posts

I tried on some CCM Vector 08's tonight - I was fully intent on buying as they were on for a great price and they fit relatively well for a skate that isn't a Graf 709 - lol.

The guy at the shop threw one of the two remaining pairs in my size in the oven for 3 minutes and told me to tighten them as I would for a game - now please keep in mind I kpnow enough to pull straight out on the laces, not up - and an eyelet on the left skate pulled right through. The guy at the shop was amazed...said he'd never seen anything like it before. He went in and got the other pair - no shit, same thing happened. He put them in for a little shorter, and he put pressure on the boot as I laced them - another eyelet pulled almost right through...and worst of all, it was on the left boot again! :( Has anyone else seen anythign like this? Do these skates not take well to heat moulding? I'd love to pick a pair up elsewhere, but if this is a common issue then I won't go near them.

Thanks.

The instructions in my CCM U+ pros said not to pull them very tight as you would to wear them, and specifically mentioned the chance of pulling the eyelets through the boots if you do.

When baking them, or in general?

I've seen it happen with CCM skates before but those guys were all pulling the shit out their laces. Not saying you were, just the circumstances that I've witnessed.

I've seen it done too - a kid did it on a pair of Vector 6's a couple years ago while I was at the store - pulling straight up tightening the crap out of them right out of the oven...since I saw that I always pull straight out to tighten and I always use wax laces. The second pair, the lace that was working out was actually below the one I was tightening...

They found me another pair, but I think I'll put some time on them without baking first - are these ok for that, or do they have that foam that you need to heat up to expand?

Thanks guys.

This is the right advice. When the skates are hot you shouldn't pull them as tight as you would when lacing them up to play. When the skates are soft you can pull them much tighter than you could if they aren't soft from the oven.

Well, that goes pretty much exaclty contrary to what the guy at the LHS told me - he instructed me to tighten them as tight if not a little tighter than I would if I was playing...odd thhat both went on the same ring on the left foot though.

If anyone can helo with this, do these have heat activated lining - do they have to be baked, or will they break in with normal wear - maybe I'll skip the oven altogether.

Is "outward not up" a general lace tightening rule, or does it only apply when dealing with fresh baked skates?

Freshly baked skates are more likely to rip out on any given lacing, but doing it all the time will rip out eyelets on any brand of skate over time.

Just buy Bauer, not CCM.

Come on Peter, we must not forget Flexlites and ONE90s.

Just pull outward, not up.

That's what I did. B)

Sorry, I posted late...long day.

Could the store have done anything to them while storing them, like leaving them in the cold/hot for too long, and could that cause the problem? They are last year's model, so they presumably have been in the back for some time.

Don't know - what I can tell you is it happened in the same spot on both of the left skates - I found them at another shop tonigth after polling every hockey store int he Montreal area - 3 minute bake, light tightening, no prob.
