Skate tongue issues

Recommended Posts

You can trim the sides of the tongue. This should be done if the material is rubbing the ankle bone inside the quarter. The size and position of your ankle bones would determine this process.

I have this similar problem, it feels like my tongue comes to far back in my boot and kills when it rubs against my ankle bone. Never had this before and it started about a year after I had my skates. So far I've just stuck a piece of foam under the tongue so it doesn't come down as low. Is there a possibility of the boot being too deep for my foot?

Well, I had this problem MAJORLY bad with my old Vapors, so I switched to one75's recently. The guy at my LHS said other people had problems with the Vapors, including himself, in which the tongue was too thick and rubbed on their ankles badly. He suggested going to a thinner tongue, which is why I went with the 75's. So far, it is much better than before, but still a little annoying. Not sure if the boot being deeper or not has anything to do with it as much as the tongue thickness and placement when your boot is laced up.

i have a buddy who trims all the excess felt from around the sides of his tongues, he says you hardly notice it, but makes them more comfortable for him.

Thanks for the input everyone. Looks like it's time to get out some trimmers and do some skate surgery! Is it bad, though, that I feel slightly guilty chopping up my brand new skates :)?

I actually did this to my Supreme One55 months ago.

I used an exacto blade.

I still get some pressure points on my fore foot at times.

But overall, it feels a lot better then it did before with the ridiculous tongue they put on the otherwise great skate.

I really hope they fix that issue with the next version of the One55.

Thinner tongue, thicker metatarsal guard, more anatomically correct.

Trimmed the felt around the ankle bones.....perfection! No more ankle pain! The tongues were some of the best I had tried out-of-the-box so far, but the slight skate surgery did the trick.
