big ben

Help me spend my money, foot pain, i.e. need new skates

Recommended Posts

Place in Dallas called Players Bench, I used to hate this place but they got rid of the old manager and the new guy is a great help and very patient, plus their pricing is almost identical to what you pay online.

-Pretty much any bauer supreme or vapor

-All the newer CCMs

-Rbk 3K, 5K, 9K

-Graf G35

-Newer Eastons

In clearence he had some S15s in my size for a great deal but I didn't try em on.

You probably should have tried them on and walked around for awhile in them.

The G35 Grafs probably will not fit you, but it wouldnt hurt to try them on and get a feel for what works.

You'll probably get more service at the store than you would online, plus baking would be included. Why would anyone buy a CCM U+ series skate online if they dont have the machine to utilize the heat molding technology at home?

Jason sold me a pair of skates that didn't have the nuts in the chassis to hold the blades in, after I ate it horribly, the pro shop in COLLEGE STATION of all places pointed how horrible the sharpening job Jason did on my skates was.

Went and tried on the S15, felt good minus that heel locker thing they have, it was kind of bugging me but I might of had the skate too tight. This is an asswhip

Big Ben... did you lace them up and then bend your knees? I've found that in some models of skates, when I lace them up tight and bend my knees, the back of the heel feels like the rear of the boot is pressing really hard onto it. If I lace up the ankles a little less tighter, then the pain is a little relieved.

Yeah I definitely laced them all the way up and tighter than I normally would anticipating I wouldn't have any forward flex whatsoever and amazingly enough I could bend forward pretty easily. So now I'm down to either the S15 or the 5Ks, going to go try them both on again. I'm concerned with any durability issues the S15 has had in the past, and I'd likely swap over my lightspeeds because they have plenty of steel and are in good condition. Does swapping holders on the S15 void the warranty, or would there be any warranty since its an older skate?

New-old-stock definitely still have warranty, but I think swapping holders may void the warranty unless you bought the skates without holders to begin with.

Big guy, I think you're looking at the wrong skates to be honest with you

I must agree. My guess is that the flexlite, 9k and possibly one95 might be your best retail choices. But if you're going to spend that much money, go custom because it's only slightly more expensive.

I have the exact same looking foot as you do, but mine are just longer (I'm 6'5" 220lbs) and I have a slightly larger arch. I had a pair of Nike Elites and have tried on Vapors with the same issue you have. The outside of my foot extremely hurts after each wear. While my foot is in the skate its not too bad but once I take my foot out and take a step its excruciatingly painful and it feels like the outside bone of my foot is broken. After a few episodes like this without resolution, I decided I need to get a new pair.

After trying on a bunch of different skates I ended up with the RBK 5k. I find it to be plenty stiff for me but I'm more of an intermediate level player and play 2 times a week max. So far I've had them for 6-7 months and couldn't be happier. Another thing worth mentioning is that I have a pretty thin heel like yourself but don't have any problem with heel lock but I did get some blisters on my feet the first 2 weeks of wearing them. Not sure what it was from given that my heel is very stationary, but the good thing is I could wear them barefoot now without any pain or issues. I can skate on them for 2-3 hours without any problems and its nice to be able to do so. And regarding the 5k and your weight, I weight just a bit less than you and haven't had any skate breakdown issues at all. I would get them again if I were to do it again but now that the price of the 7k's has dropped I would consider spending some extra cash on those instead. But I'm pretty sure you'll be really happy with the RBK fit given our feet are almost identical. Good luck in your shopping and let us know what you get!

p.s. going from tuuk's to the e-pro is a bit different but you get used to it after a few skates. I felt like I was on my toes too much with the e-pro which is probably a good thing actually but it takes some getting used to

CCM U+ and its variants or the Graf G70 or 709 if you can find a pair

+1 on one of the U+ models. I have wide/flat/high-volume feet and have found that the U+ 09 I received as warranty replacements from CCM are very comfortable.

Well, I ended up buying a pair of Reebok 5Ks and two years later I think I have destroyed them. Its amazing they lasted that long and the bladder still holds air. Although roughly 6 months ago I cracked one of the holders and had it replaced, overall they have been good skates. Anyway I would like to think the boot is broken down, I have to tighten them alot more for support, I'm not as fast as I was, etc. and back in the same boat with skates. This go-around I want to find something that will last me 5+ years, any recs?

If you liked the fit of the 5Ks, why not go for a higher end RBK? 9K or 11K? Should break down a lot slower.

Also I wanted to mention, in your first post you say something about superfeet and arch support. As I understand it, Superfeet aren't meant to be arch support, but rather HEEL support. I just put Superfeet in my RBK 8Ks a few weeks ago and for literally the first time ever, the bottoms of my feet don't hurt when skating. Hell, just walking from the dressing room to the bench used to have the bottoms of my feet in agony. But I digress...

This is something I have personaly gone through myself. After playing all my life I took several years off. When I came back to playing, skate design changed dramatically. I went through skates like water....I had severe pain with the outside of my feet. I finally went and saw a foot doctor. For me it was my body alignment... I pushed to the outside of my skates. Both of my skate holders were bent inward. It didn't matter what skate I owned or how wide. If you put my foot on Scale I am an E and I wore EE skates and still had the pain. My suggestion is you see a foot doctor and look at your blade holders. This is far more common then you would think. After having my skate holders removed and shimmed my severe foot pain went away and my skating performance increased. I had a pair of 8090's and now CCM u 10's and couldn't be happier. This may not be your problem, but I would research it.
