Rules Question

Recommended Posts

Is it illegal under IIHF/NHL rules to play with a cast on any part of your body, or just for the general safety of the injured player? I had a buddy of mine have major surgery to repair a broken finger and was back playing on the pond no contact roughly 2 weeks later.

This sparks another question. Do they believe tape will give the fighter an advantage? Obviously, a cast hurts when you get accidentally hit with one, let alone slugged in the face during a fight.

Under IIHF, USAH and HC rules the case must be soft or covered with soft material. NHL rules don't really matter as they generally ignore them anyway.

The specs for the material to pad a cast with are specific, you should check the USA Hockey rulebook (rule 305) and bring a copy of it to the game, not all refs know that rule. You also need a note from a physician otherwise it's a no-go even with the proper padding.

It definately does give an advantage. It sticks more to the opponent who is getting hit which can cause the opponent to cut easier. Thats just how i see it though.

Steve Ott was suspended for "Intent to Injure" after defending himself against a few punches last season when he injured his hand.

It's one of the few "black & white" rules that the NHL has enforced consistently.

It's probably in best interest that Gonchar lost the cast then. PS: Let's go pens! He's back in the lineup tonight, cast free and ready to roll!

Ott actually tore out the stitching that keep his gloves sewn to his jersey?

Not only does it give you a little extra padding on your hand you could use it to hide things (like foil in slapshot). Tape is pretty course compared to skin. It does a good job of grabbing hold of skin and tearing it, especially around the eyebrow and cheek bone

It is not illegal in the NHL, however, a player with any kind of tape or cast on the hands cannot engage in fisticuffs.

I thought "fisticuffs" was illegal with or without tape on the hands. Thats why a penalty is given for fighting.

There is a difference between something that results in a penalty and something that results in a suspension
