Recommended Posts

Uh, if you haven't seen any definite answer, then where's the negativity coming from?

I don't mind them. I like the removable shoulders caps. I play no contact so I'd definitely take them off. As far as reviews, the only "bad" thing I've heard is that they fit a bit large. Other than that, I haven't heard anything negative. I just think people are reluctant to the strange design.

I paid $75 for mine and at that price they are worth it. I like minimalist light somewhat breathable gear as I am a bigger guy and don't like bulk nor heat. They get the best compliment from me as when I put them on I forget they are there, and as far as shoulder pads go, that is perfect. Purchase the black and as small size as you need. I am 205 and mediums are loose on me

i've got the black in size S and i have no problems with them. they do fit large and stomach protection is non existent so if you take a lot of shots to the midsection maybe go with some reebok...

ive just read in previous threads on here that people mention there are better choices for protection but without stating why. just looking for clarification before i purchase them.

They're overpriced for the protection that they provide.

Ye that pretty much it in a nut shell at my lhs they are over 150+ $.they are comfortable as hell with th but the actual plastic parts for the shoulders are small (and personally wouldn't trust taking a shot off those cubes) but to me its mostly the price

Mostly they are making the point that the Farrells dont have enhanced spine and sternum protection like a lot of pads out there do. It also seems to me that I hear a lot of people worried that they are too short, and don't come down past the mid chest and rib cage.

Regarding the protection they provide - this past season I have played with three kids who have had new shoulder injuries (1 collar bone, 2 ac joints - one kid removed his shoulder caps) while wearing the pads. I have a large pair just laying around I got for free, and refuse to wear them. I can see pulling them out for no contact games (but still haven't done so), but with the style I play in real games there is no way I trust them. I also really wouldn't want to take a shot off those cubes, and a friend told me getting a stick anywhere on them does not feel very good.

Ive played full contact hockey getting down and blocking shots with them .. they run way too short. I would never play in the nhl with them thats for sure, however i dont plan on going back to anythign else. There just so much more comfortable then anything i've ever worn, they run short but i havnt experienced any major lack of protection really while wearing them. Dont seem much worse then my 8k reeboks to me..

In my opionion Farrels are alright for light contact and pickup hockey but I wouldn't wear them for semi-serious contact or full contact hockey. I really don't believe they are protective enough to protect the shoulder joint and clavicle from a heavy hit. The body protection isn't bad and will deflect most shocks associated body, puck and stick contact because the little rectangular cell squares dissapate a lot of the energy generated by such contact. A combination of both features with heavier shoulder protection would make a very decent shoulder pad IMHO.

Like the shoulder pads and goalie chest/arm unit that TPS introduced a few years back.

Doesn't TPS produce similar pads still? How do they compare to the Farrels?

I bought a pair of these in the U.S. They are way too expensive here in Canada. For non-contact beer league they are great. They are extremely comfortable and light. I would never wear them when playing contact though. The only 2 negatives are they run short (don't protect the stomach). Also, the shoulder cap is too large. They make you look like you are a linebacker. Yes, I know you can take them off, but you never know what'll happen.

Honestly, I don't think that farrell made them to be bulletproof. If you look at that whole "million tiny cubes" thing they have going on, it's built to flexible and light.

For those of you who are going to argue that hockey is a contact sport and that all padding should be built to be unbreakable, look at the tiny little pads that are made for lacrosse.

The theory behind the dissapation of energy using air cushioning is a good one. Easton has been using it for a long time and now Cascade uses it in their helmets. But like a lot of things it can be used in some places but is fairly ineffective for other applications. You definitely need something more substantial to protect your shoulder joints that deflects the shock before it reaches that joint. A small air pocket just won't do the trick.
