Tapered blade comparison

Recommended Posts

Can't speak to the xxxx or the Warrior but the X:60 is a poor blade IMO.

I thought it had a very hollow feel to it when catching passes and felt whippy on shots. This was used w/ an X:60 shaft. I'd avoid the X60...

Several members are complaining of it breaking easily too.

Roscoe how long have you had the easton? I've heard the durability is bad on them.

I have had THIS ONE for a little over 3 months now - practice twice a week, two games a weekend (Given, I did have a week off for Thanksgiving and an off weekend with no games.). It still has the original stiffness and pop to it, just typical scratches and scuffs. The only major problem I have had with these blades in the past is the toe chipping/cracking. I don't know if that has to do with the blade itself, or if it is just a reflection of my playing style. I would recommend this blade, but I have also heard great things about the Warrior HD. (I had a one piece XXXX and wasn't a fan at all.) If you can, maybe make a run down to your LHS and actually feel the blades side by side, if you haven't already. That might give you a little better perception of them for yourself. Best of luck!

It's down to the xxxx or dolo for me. Anyone else have opinions on the xxxx's performance? Consensus seems to be it's durable, but how's the weight, feel, etc on it? And my concern with the dolo is that I've heard people complain about them fitting loosely in non warrior shafts, any problem putting it in a flyweight?

I've been considering a Vapor XXXX composite, or even an X:60. I've been using Vapor XXXX woodies, and loooove them. I'll either a) horde up on the woodies, or B) try out some composite tapered blades. Although, I should actually get on the ice for the first time this winter before hand.

Ah yeah I don't like dead feeling blades, thanks. Maybe ill see if my lhs can pop in a dolo in the flyweight to see if it fits snug, seems like its that or easton, but I worry about the durability.

My experiences:

Durability (from best to worst):

Dolomite

Vapor XXXX

Christian/Harrow

Dolomite HD

Easton SE16

Feel (from best to worst):

Easton SE16

Dolomite HD

Christian/Harrow

Vapor XXXX

Dolomite

If I were buying a tapered blade tomorrow, it'd be a Harrow, with a Dolo HD a close second.

Thanks for your review, I was just debating whether I should get some Harrow 300 blades.

so what you're saying here is that every single brand sacrifices durability for feel (and vice versa) except harrow which has somehow balanced the two?

i DO NOT agree with that.

Yes. Here's a bit more detail:

Dolomite - had two of these blades, one had a gouge out of the top but stayed stiff for a year, the other wore slightly on the heel after six months, both were in very usable shape when I sold them. Puck feel was horrendous, like stickhandling with a ceramic plate.

Vapor XXXX - got it used and beat up, but still very stiff, has shown little wear since, it's my third backup so it doesn't see much ice, puck feel is slightly better than the Dolomite but not much. I knocked durability because I have a XXV (blade looks the same) which is falling apart kind of quickly as chunks come off the heel.

Christian/Harrow - I had two of these, one broke on the first shot at the tenon (wrote it off as a bad blade), the other lasted six months of very heavy usage before breaking at the tenon. Puck feel was decent, like a very light wood blade.

Dolomite HD - I used it for a couple months, puck feel was very good, I sold it before it was used too much, but I've heard way too many horror stories and a buddy split his not only at the toe but also in the middle of the heel of the blade (not at the bottom, literally cracked in half up the blade like someone took an axe to it).

Easton SE16 - used it for a couple months, puck feel was excellent, passes stuck to it like a heavy wood blade, it was very light, but the heel started to wear and chip after a few uses and after a month it started going soft, sold it before it got too bad because I wasn't a fan of the pattern.

I actually generally agree with Jarick with the exception of the dolomite (non-HD) which I would say falls somewhere closer to the middle in the feel category (I really didn't like the XXXX feel so I would say it's at least above that). Overall, I think we're very close to full agreement. Notice that the Harrow blade falls in the middle of both of Jarick's categories. Therefore, Jarick is saying that it sacrifices durability for feel but just to a lesser extent than the other options (SE16, Dolo HD). He is saying it provides a good balance between reliability and feel.

I have synergy elites (pretty much the same as the SE16 if not the same), regular dolomites, I have used a friends vapor xxxx a number of times, I bought a bunch of harrow stuff recently due to their sale code, and also a host of standard blades (S15, One95, Christian woodies, TPS woodies, Easton woodies, Easton ST, etc). The harrow blades are solid. They are very light but not the lighest, durable but not the most durable, and offer very good but not the greatest feel.

At $20 each they were pretty much the best deal going IMO
