Moving Graf Holders?

Recommended Posts

I am trying to help reduce my 8 year old son's problems with pronating ankles. I have been told that one of the things you can do to reduce pronation is to move the holders in (for pronation) or out (for supination) along the midline of the skate. Traditionally this requires drilling new holes in the bottom of the boot for the new location. I have been told however that with Graf skates, the holders are mounted with screws and are therefore easier to make these types of adjustments. I have even heard that some of Graf's holders are begining to come with slots in them so that they can be moved without drilling new holes. Is this true? Which models have the screws? Which models have the slots? Has anyone on this forum ever tried moving holders to reduce pronation or supination and had any success with it? My son currently wears Reebok 7Ks and I he is about to need a new pair of skates and I am trying to figure our what to get him next.

Thanks for your help.

Where are you from? A friend of mine has the same problem, he bought his in Canada and they fit him right there. He bought Graf and they popped off the holders and fit him right in the shop.

Unfortunately, St. Louis, Missouri. No trips to Canada in the forseeable future. The kids in the LHS's around here don't seem to know anything about slotted holders.

They do use screws instead of rivets for mounting the holders but you still need to drill holes in the sole. They are more like a nut and bolt than a wood screw. I have not seen the holders with slots instead of holes yet and I would have some concerns about their stability.

I emailed Graf and just heard back from them. The rep said that their holders are starting to come with slots instead of round holes so that you can tweak them. He said that not all models have transitioned yet and that it is still new so not a lot of stores have product yet with the slots. He said that you can still do the same thing with the existing holders by removing material on the holders (turning the holes into slots). He said that it is of course much easier to make slots in the holders than to drill new holes in the boot (and in my case this is also a better solution because I want to use trial and error with my son until I find the right spot that helps his pronation the most). I also am a little concerned about whether or not the holders will eventually move, but I've got to believe that the Graf product engineers know what they are doing and would have checked that out.

I asked the rep if you can tell the holders are the new ones by examining them on the skate (so that I can be sure I am buying the new ones rather than the old ones) and he said that the slot is in fact a little wider than the screw and that you can see the slot when looking at it)

Incidentally, I talked to a guy at the Total Hockey closest to my house and he didn't know anything about slotted holders or "making" slots in the holders. He has only done the new holes in the boot method. I talked to a guy at the BIG Total Hockey store in St. Peters and he said that a rep had come out and shown them the new holders but that he hadn't received any yet (he went and checked a couple pairs to make sure). The main hockey guy at Johnny Mac's hadn't heard of it and also said that he would be concerned about them coming loose.

I guess I'll just have to keep my eyes open until I see some show up in a LHS.

Slots are not a good idea, holder will shift once weight is put on it. Now if graf has some kind of "filler" washer that prevents the holder from moving at the screw, that might work, but in no way will a slot in the plastic be stable.
