NBH One90 Tendon Guard Repair?

Recommended Posts

I suppose this was inevitable, but my tendon guards have finally broken off. They're practically hanging by a thread.

I've seen one or two posts where people have brought their NBH One90 into a shoe repair shop to get the tendon guard stitched back on. Does anybody have any experience or comments doing this?

Thanks!

I just had one of mine repaired. I brought it to a hockey shop that does their own repairs, I had them back within a 4 days I think. They cut a new piece of plastic that was inserted around the broken piece and restitched the whole thing together.

I'll post some pics so you can see later.

Total cost of the repair for reinforcing the broken tendon guard and having the other one restitched was $25.

Those are great pics!

I just brought my skates to Toronto Hockey Repair (on the way home from my office).

I'll post pics of the repair after I get my skates back. Hopefully they'll be done in time for my next game!

Geeze, sorry this took a while. Tendon guard repair pictures from Toronto Hockey Repair / THR.

Looks like they initially glued on the leather, followed up by a ton of stitches. The final result is that my tendon guards are now attached to my skate. Not exactly pretty, but it works. I don't think they used extra plastic to add stiffness back into the tendon guard. But then again, I've been skating on broke tendon guards for over a year - it's nice to have tendon guards that aren't hanging on by a thread.

I wear socks so I don't really feel the patch of leather too much during game time. If I'm just skating around, I can definitely feel the extra leather but it doesn't really hinder performance. That or I don't have enough skill where it matters :)

I just noticed that the tendon guard on my right skate, CCM U12s, is ripped/broken, right where it meets the boot. Any idea what could have cause this? I noticed a small rip on one side over the summer, but today I saw it was all the way across and the plastic is broken. I unlace my skates pretty far down, and don't put any strain on the tendon guard when taking them off or putting them on. I don't tape around them either. I don't feel like I do any weird skating maneuvers where I'm leaning back and my calf would be pressing down on it.

This happened to a previous pair of Reebok 10ks from a few years ago, which is what worried me. Am I just a victim of bad luck twice? I cannot think of any actions that would cause this.

I don't live too far from Zwickers, which has pics above for the better looking repair, so I'll take them up there tomorrow.

I wanted to report on my success with getting my 5K skate guard repaired as this forum was helpful during my search.

I brought my skates to a few local hockey shops and they said they'd have to break the old one and screw in a new tendon guard from Nash Sports Manufacturing (http://nashsports.ca). This wasn't an option as I didn't want my RBK pump skates punctured.

I took to my local cobbler (Hugo's Shoe Repair; http://hugoshoerepair.wix.com/hugoshoerepair) inVancouver, and hoped for the best. The guy's been doing this for 30 years or so. He took a week, charged me $50 and exceed my expectations! They're like brand new, and very reinforced. I think he used glue, some sort of plastic parts, and some leather and stitched it up. Here are the pics. I'm very impressed by his work, and would highly recommend his services if you're in Vancouver. This repair should extend these skates for another 5 years.

PS: the cause of the tendon guard was not taking my skates off properly. Unlace them 3 holes down at least and take good care of them in the bag.
