Huge bench clearing brawl in KHL

Recommended Posts

It was funny to see Jagr get into the mix but I'm really surprised the goalies didn't throw down. As a goalie myself, I would've loved to be part of a bench clearing brawl, because other wise there is no other reason to get into a fight. These guys just stood around and talked.

The first tilt actually wasn't too bad...aside from the glass. Does anyone know if the KHL penalizes players who remove their helmets when they're gonna go? Or can this just be chalked up to "Europeans being Europeans"?

"Europeans being Europeans"? does that mean not wanting to risk dying while taking part in what is basically a staged fight in the middle of a meaningless game when they have 50 or 60 years of life in front of them?

The KHL has a horrible track record when it comes to protecting the health of its players (see Chereponav), so maybe the players don't want to risk a freak accident that could kill them while partaking in a farcical tussle (see Don Sanderson of the OHA).

I believe the "Europeans being Europeans" comment was an over the top way to say that many of the players who opt for the KHL do so because of the less physical nature of the European game than the game played in North America.

One thing I will guarantee, not one player involved in this brawl held back because the name Don Sanderson popped into their heads.

Of course. But I would counter by saying that I can guarantee that most, if not all, players who held back did so because they valued their health more than whatever issue provoked the fight, especially when there are serious doubts about the competence of the medical staff on hand. So, Sanderson is just a specific example of the general principle that is likely driving the behavior in the video.

Looked like a few of those guys might have had a legitimate bone to pick with one another. First fight looked to stem from a hit thrown along the near-side glass at center - one of the Vityaz players didn't like the way his buddy got run and stepped-up. I good on him and good on the Avangard guy for answering the bell...but the messages of "Don't run my guy" and "I'll run whoever the Hell I want to run" get muffled by the visors. Really want to send a message to the boys? Then that visor is going to have to come off after you drop the gloves.
