hockeytim18 0 Report post Posted February 15, 2010 This is crazy. Just Friday night I was talking to some of my teammates that played there and we were talking about how big it was and how the Zamboni left the worst fumes. That sucks that this happened to that rink, but thank goodness no one was hurt. Hopefully they can do something to get the kids out there a rink to play at soon again. Trooper 8 Report post Posted February 15, 2010 I played there when I was young and coached a game there about 7 years ago, it was really in sad shape. I can't believe nobody got hurt. I guess Ice Connection now regains the title of worst rink in the area.
biff44 0 Report post Posted February 15, 2010 Yeah, it helps to keep your eyes open. Especially if the roof has a thick blanket of snow/ice on it.I was at a festival in a MA college arena once, and being an engineer, was studying the roof trusses. I noticed that some of the steel trusses had started to buckle--some as much as 2-4" offset from where they should be. Emailed the local building inspector the next day, they looked it over, and a few months later a complex web of steel cables were installed to keep the roof trusses from buckling. For some reason the orginal builder did not provide any latteral support! I suspect that if you are in a rink where the roof is ready to collapse, you can see stuff like that going on overhead. Invert 13 Report post Posted February 16, 2010 Apparently the old Neville Rink in the South Side collapsed. A group of us were actually looking into the costs to reopen it as an inline rink, but that is out now.

zebra_steve 11 Report post Posted March 3, 2010 ice connection. haha. and the rinks around here keep falling over somehow. Rink near St. Vincent College collapsed and same with one in Kittaning. Please get your facts straight! Exactly which rink in Kittanning, and which rink in the Latrobe area collapsed?ANY RINK COLLAPSES WOULD HAVE MADE THE LOCAL NEWS.... None of the guys skating in Kittanning said that there was a collapse (let alone the local news) and I can assure you that nothing near St Vincents collapsed - I live in Greensburg and would definitely know about it. You may be thinking about Center Ice in Delmont... I was on the ice when they decided to close the East rink and coordinate closely with Center Ice Management and Allegheny Hockey. Center Ice is hosting PAHL Playoffs this weekend and I will be on the ice there tonight with my daughter. As I understand the situation, the rink staff noticed that something didn't look right and contacted the owners. The owners called in the engineers and voluntarily opted to close the East Rink (one of three sheets) as a precaution and kept it closed to clean, inspect, and reinforce the roof. I believe that they have done the same to the other two sheets over the past week or so but I do not and cannot speak for the rink.
