Powerskating class & need a sharpen

Recommended Posts

I am taking a 8 week powerskating class starting next week to improve my skating skills. Currently I have been using a FBV 100/50 but it needs a resharpen. No place in AZ offers FBV yet and I don't have time to mail it out before the first session. What ROH would you recommend I get, especially with the type of hard skating they will be having us do?

Does it make a huge difference when you're skating on FBV as opposed to a regular skate sharpening? You can always get a 3/4 sharpening or something you are comfortable with and go through the camp with that. I'm not sure if the FBV vs regular sharpening is an issue when you're at the skating camp to improve your skating regardless of hollow, fbv, etc..

I agree. With a power skating camp, you are better off with regular hollow as it will make you work a little harder. Save FBV for game time.

He may also need to resort to going local for his skate sharpening as well since it is an 8 week camp. He'll have to sharpen them more often if he's doing power skating exercises

Not to hijak, but I am also doing a powerskating clinic real soon. I recently made the switch to 5/8 from 1/2.

The clinic is a weekend, 6 hours of ice time, should i go in with a fresh 5/8 and let that last the whole clinic

In terms of bite I found 100/50 to be similar to 5/8

in terms of glide FBV is obviously superior

as far as sharpening goes - obviously if you use skate guards & be careful not to step on anything hard etc then it'd extend the life of your edges, and if it's 1 hr a week class then it can be done.

otherwise 8 weeks is pushing it...

It also depends on the time of year and location. On hard ice, I need to keep the blades sharper, but in the summer, I can go 2-3 weeks w/o sharpening. I tend to sharpen more often since I have free lifetime sharpening at the place I got my skates.

Going to the shop today. Do I need to tell them to do anything different when they sharpen since they will be putting the ROH over a FBV?

not in my experience

going the other way though (putting FBV over regular ROH) is tricky though - in the past here's even been reports that crossgrind might be required, but I think later on it was settled as not needed, but maybe just a few extra passes instead?
