Wallzy41 9 Report post Posted March 14, 2010 So, If I'm playing the puck around the corner and get tripped. It's 2 minutes for tripping, understood. What happens if I go into the boards on the trip and I get injured? 2,5+Game, Tripping + Intent to Injure?
adam14 182 Report post Posted March 14, 2010 no, because the injury was not intended, it was because you fell into the boards.
shooter27 116 Report post Posted March 15, 2010 Just two minutes for tripping. Intent to injure penalties are meant for situations where the player is clearly attempting to injure an opponent, not an accidental injury. Also, technically the 5minute major vs 2minute minor decision is supposed to happen independently of whether or not an injury occurred (with the exception of a high-stick drawing blood). So just because an injury happened, the penalty is not automatically a major and just because no injury happened, the penalty is not automatically a minor. I know in practice, that injuries and the major vs. minor decision ofter get intertwined, but that's not the way its supposed to happen officially.

Any penalty that you were going to call a minor, becomes a major and game misconduct if there is an injury. There wouldn't be a match and the accompanying 30 day suspension, but the major plus game should be automatic in any injury situation.
bednarz877 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2010 granted the nhl may be different, but ovechkin got a boarding call today that turned into 5+ a game because campbell was injured.

So, for instance, player A trips player B because in the process of A swiping at the puck, player B stepping on A's stick - so its an accident, still a penalty, but not an intentional trip - in the process of tripping, player B lands on the ice extremely hard and injures something - either a shoulder, or hits his head and gets a concussions, whatever - then player A automatically gets a major + game? Something about that just is intuitively off to me, I could be wrong though.
furlanitalia 1 Report post Posted March 15, 2010 This is a fine line. Ideally calls should be made because of the action and not the result. But even under Hockey Canada's rules there are a lot of incidences in which it says "if injury results...."

The injury had nothing to with the hit but since the ref was already going to give him a minor he said he had to give the guy on my team a major penalty.
