do you want to get customs or off the shelf.

I've used these before... comments on each as well:

Innovation Sports CTI2 - customed, worked well before my muscles started to bulk up again, then needed to get a replacement

3Dx - worked well, still fits me to this day. Hinges are a little bulky, even though they fit under my shin pads I'm a little concious about the hinges hitting the other knee

Innovation Sports CTI2 'hockey' - specifically designed for hockey, very solidly made, still using it for the past 5 years

Innovation Sports C180 - got this for my uninjured knee as a precaution, very low profile, thinner construction compared to the CTi2, but still moldable to some extent. I also used this for soccer. Even though its an off the shelf brace its solidly built.

There are a few guys here who are using the donjoy brand as well... might want to keep your options open. At the end of the its like a pair of skates or some gloves... its all personal preference and what fits you best.

i've been using a breg fusion xt for the last year and have no complaints with it. chose it over the donjoy because of the profile. i also took a shingaurd and skates with me to insure that there would not be any problems. this brace and the ones fatwabbit are talking about are going to run you well over $500 with out insurance. mine was $710 w/out insurance, my copay was $130. these are also called derotational braces. the best advise i can give you is to see your doctor/ or the guy that makes braces at you local medical supply store.

Like fatwabbit said, DonJoy makes a great brace. I use this one for my right knee, and plan on getting another as mine is five years old as it is, and another one for my left knee as well.

It works very well for me. BTW, no mods needed for my shinguards. 14" NBH Supreme 70's worked fine.

That's what I wear whenever my knee is acting up.

Just wanted to add... I've been wearing the knee brace under my current Mission NME1 shin pads. The strapping is a little more sbug due to the presence of the knee brace, but you dont feel it much...

Been wearign knee braces everytime I play for the past 7-8 years.

If you have ever stepped on an opponent's stick blade on the rush and wiped out, you know the benefit of wearing a knee brace. They have saved me torn cartilage many times. Worth every cent.................wearing them as part of standard equipment forever.

I would refuse to play if I ever forgot to bring my knee braces... regardless.

My health over the win-lose of the team... at the end of the day, its my health against losing in a rec league... not like I play pro or anything.

I'm wearing a Don Joy Defiance III custom knee brace (post ACL recon). I had to make major modifications to my shin pad to get a decent fit. Anyway, are you looking for a rigid brace brace or a soft brace? A soft brace will offer some support but not as much protection. Check out a Don Joy Playmaker. It's a soft brace with metal hinges. My ortho surgeon suggested I wear that brace pre-surgery.
