Is there a joke in there, or does it actually cost a couple hundred? Cause that sounds ridiculous and can't see how it would be justified...

EDIT: Just read the brochure. Really? It improves strength and reaction time along with release stress so you can perform better? Kitay4 please let us know if you experience any of this.

They cost around $450, although the dentist I'm going to next week has them discounted to $345 or something.

On a side note, if anyone remembers the Edge Pro Sports mouthguard from a while back, apparently Under Armour bought them and they're making the new performance mouthguards.

I figured that out at the expo, when they gave me some little tchotchke and I noticed it had the Edge logo stamped on it.

I won't swear to any kind of herculean performance increase, but I have noticed a HUGE difference in how much more oxygen you get using one of those. I bought an Edge 5+ years ago and use it to this day - which is actually nasty and disgusting and why I'm getting an Under Armour to replace it. I have tried half a dozen mouthguards in the interim and took them out within minutes because I felt like I couldn't breathe.

You can argue whether they're worth the money all you want, but I bought that Edge for $100 or something (which was outrageous for a mouthguard at the time) and I'll swear by it. I've used it over 5 seasons now and there's SOMETHING to the position in which it holds your jaw that honestly does increase your oxygen intake, whatever the benefits of that may or may not be.

I think that one is for non contact sports. They have three different designs, all for the purpose of being able to clench your teeth while you play to get the most out of your body.

Weird. The reason I don't wear a mouthguard anymore is because I always hate breathing in them.

me too.

and every time i step on the ice, i think "is this the day i lose teeth?"

Well I'm certainly not trying to sell anyone on a $350-500 mouthguard or anything. All I can say is that my Edge is well worth the $100 I spent on it like 5 years ago, and seeing the Edge logo on the cheap piece of tin they gave me at their booth is what pushed me over the edge to drop the money on a UA.

My next door neighbor is my dentist so i had him order it for me...his office just started their partnership with UA so he wasnt 100% sure what they were gonna cost...

you go to your dentist and they create the impressions, then they send it to the UA factory which will create the guard then send it back to the dentist for a final fitting...

You dentist can probably fit you for a custom one from a dental manufacturer for less.

Yah but it won't give you there purported benefits. Although I also don't understand how it's 350-500 when the only real difference is the pads to bite down on. Which I'm starting to think would wear out if used properly, and then what? You buy another one?

From what I've heard you're paying more for the impressions and molds they make than anything else. I'd imagine the dentist doing the teeth molds and sending them in is the expensive part. The mouth guard itself may only be around $100. All UA is doing once they get the impressions is molding the mouthguard to them and sending it back.

This should help explain the benefits of a performance mouthguard:

I was blown away too when I first watched it. I am quite sure its the same science with Under Armor mouthguards.

Personally, I have never tried a performance mouthguard just a $40 custom mouthguard that does a very good job and I cannot justify spending big bucks for slight performance increase as I only play adult beer league :D

Don't be fooled by a slick add. There is still debate in the medical field as to the benefits of a mouthguard to prevent concussion. It seems like a great idea, in theory, but there is scant data to support the claims. Hockey Canada does not require mouthguards for youth hockey, probably because of the lack of good data.
