Glove Help

Recommended Posts

Salming makes really good gloves but if you can find Pre-Vaughn X72s... There no comparison, the Eagles are better gloves. I cannot comment on Vaughn made X72s as I haven't seen a pair of those in person.

So then why suggest pre-Vaughn X72s and not just X72s in general?

...because I've seen/used pre-Vaughn X72s. I'm not going to recommend a product I haven't even held in my hands.

The first generation evolutions were very nice, other than the pro-glo on the cuff and part of the backroll. The palms were fantastic on those gloves. I tried to convince them to make a nylon version, but they had no interest in it because it didn't fit the designer's "vision for the product."

SubliTWILL must be on the rag or something... easy with the bashing, buddy! Why don't you direct your comments at the product instead.

So, do you have every great idea of the industry Chadd? Just curious...seems like you have a pattern of dropping the "oh, that was my idea."

Not at all, nor do I claim to. I just knew that pro-glo had bombed in a lot of markets and putting it on their glove would likely adversely impact sales. Much like you, I tend to share my opinions.

Hey KKlinder I think the X72s now have full MSH2 palms instead of nash/msh overlay combo. I would definitely look at those if that's the case!

I have a pair of "Vaughn made" X72s and love them. In reality nothing changed with the Eagle production other than the profits now go to Vaughn. Vaughn retained the majority of the actual production staff as well as the facility so the gloves have not really changed other than the palms. I would go with the Eagles all the way but its obviously your choice.

The gloves are made in the Vaughn facility in London, not the old Eagle facility. That in itself is a HUGE change.

Agreed. Several people on this board have commented on how different the gloves feel post Vaughn-buyout.

SubliTWILL you seem to be very knowledgeable about the eagle/vaughn merger so you may be able to help me out and hopefully it will help some other members. I bought a pair of Eagle "Pro" gloves right before the PPF came out a couple years ago so I assume they are essentially the same model. Anyway, I love them but they are on their last legs and I am looking into buying a new pair of PPF's but just like the previous post mentioned there has been chatter on the board that the fit and quality is not as good as it was pre Vaughn buyout. Needless to say I am a little concerned about shelling out $200 for a new pair. Any insight would be appreciated.

be aware though that the new 2010 x72's are built in the old x70 mold. so not anything like the old x72's.

If you got those "'Pro" models from Icewarehouse a few years ago, there are slight differences between those and the PPF's. The PPF's have tapered fingers, while the "Pro" model have regular, non-tapered fingers. The side along the pinky has three areas of thin foam on the PPF, while the "Pro" has two areas of foam.

What were the differences between the old x70 and x72, or better yet, why would it be bad that the new x72s are built in the old x70 mold?

they are different fitting gloves. the x70's have a wider and longer fit than the x72's. the 72's also have a super short cuff where the 70's have a more traditional length cuff.

not necessarily a "bad" thing they've changed the molds, but bad for those who liked the old x72 fit (like myself) and find they're ending up with what are actually x70's instead.

Gotcha, their numbering system still confuses me from time to time. So essentially the quality is the same, the fit and construction are just different between the higher end gloves?

By way of update, after trying on the Eagle X72 again and having some hesitation, I decided to pick up a pair of the Salming Evolution Pro on eBay (for a whole lot less than the X72). After several skates, I have to say that I love these gloves. They break in quickly, have great palms (pretty clear at this point that they'll wear very well), are not too loose/not too tight, don't stink at all, and look pretty cool if you ask me. Very pleased.

So, it's been almost a year since I bought the Salming Evolutions off eBay. After liking the fit, mobility, and palms of the first pair, I stocked up at something like $55/pair. I'm still using the first pair with no holes in the palms and barely any odor. At about 2x per week playing, I think that's pretty good. The palms are now a bit crusty when I just put them on, but I'm thinking that shaving cream will help that. Anyway, very impressed. I'd be curious if others have tried them, and other gloves to which they can be compared.
