What's in a blade?

Recommended Posts

I've ready several posts where many people say that the One95 OPS has the best puck feel, and that users immediately notice the benefits of using this particular stick over other ones. I'm just curious as to how much of this is due to the blade and how much of this is due to the shaft. I would imagine that a One95 2pc (shaft + blade) would offer a similar feel to the One95 OPS. That being said, does this mean that the puck feel is mostly dependent on the blade? For example, if I used a One95 blade in a Warrior AK27 shaft, would it offer me the same feel? Granted, I understand that the shaft will play some role in the overall (due to materials, thickness, or whatever else) feel, but can it be generally assumed that it will be similar?

A shaft will generally have very little impact on the feel of the puck. It is the type of foam and the construction methods that make the biggest impact on puck feel.

The One95 definitely has foam inside the blade (just saw one broken last week). Usually the type of foam, number of ribs, etc changes the puck feel. But since we don't really have to worry about that, just take the general consensus of users' puck feel. The blade is going to be the biggest factor in puck feel.

The grade of carbon can also impact the puck feel too, but yeh, the foam right now is probably the biggest factor.

i actually like the puck feel of the s19 more than my one95.

i did notice the one95's blade is thicker than most blades i have.

Either way, the one95 does have great puck feel, like one poster stated; it's because of the foam inside.

I can't completely answer your question, but the feel of the AK27 shaft and One95 blade setup is (in my opinion) great. Like other posters have stated, I think the feel has a lot more to do with the blade than the shaft.

The coating definitely plays a roll in feel. I also notice that tape changes the way blades feel. I normally overlap the tape more on pingy feeling sticks like Easton or a Vapor stick.

The tape impact is very noticeable on a one95 OPS. Try messing around with a smarthockey ball with your one95, with and without tape... I felt a pretty big difference.

Is that black tape or white tape? ;)

Going to have to agree with the One95 blade (I have the OPS). Hated it when I got it, but after getting used to it and now that I can actually feel the puck and stickhandle, it's a dream.

I'm actualy a big fan of the TPS 12K blades on the R10 & R8's. The puck feel is great and they are very durable. I've been going back and forth b/w a One95 OPS and a R10 and I feel the 12k blade has a little better puck feel. And of course it's all personal preference.

+1 on all counts. Definitely a strong personal preference sort of thing, but I too find that my R8 has excellent puck feel - that stick just "talks" to me.

just thought I'd share "my store" here since i appears to be relevant:

about a year ago I was using One95 shaft with One95 wooden blade - great puck feel (of course), but ran into all sorts of issues related to durability of a wooden blade

then I switched to One95 blade with the same shaft & the puck feel has gotten noticeably worse

switched to One95 Ops & the great feel is back again (almost as good as wood!)

the reason I think 2 piece setup didn’t work for me is because of the fact that the blade didn’t fit perfectly into a shaft (even though both are the same brand & model One95!) – it was too small, so some tape had to be used to make it sit tight in there, and because of that the tape must be dumpling the feel of the vibration coming up from the blade through the shaft.

Black WITH WAX! :P

I'm telling you, try it. I should also say that the difference is less apparent with a puck(on ice) than the smarthockey ball. The difference probably has to do with the friction on the surface it's being used on, ice compared to tile/rubber mats/carpet.

Either way, I have no trouble feeling the puck with an Easton(Vapor is also similar) to a one95. I just appreciate the high feedback sticks like the one95, the V130 and the Mission Pulse has/had.
