Getting the flex out of your stick

Recommended Posts

I was recently experimenting with different flexes to find what is best for me but I can't seem to get the flex out of my stick that I was expecting.

I'm about 5'7" 150lbs and for a few months i was using a cheap 65 flex bauer stick that was cut down to about 75'ish mark. The whip was crazy but i got adjusted to it and it helped my shot from what I could tell. I used the stick for a while until it broke and I was worried that if i got another intermediate stick it wouldn't hold up against strong slashes and hacks, (the bauer got a slash that cracked the shaft and then I broke it on a slapshot).

I finally settled on a 75 flex RBK 10K that I cut down to the 81 flex line, but I can't get as much flex out of it as i was expecting to. How can i get more flex out of the stick? Would cutting it down a bit more and sticking a butt end in it give if more flex? (leverage). Would a tacki-mac grip help get more flex?

Pick up an oggie grip. It's the only thing I have seen so far that can make a stick whippier. If you don't like the ergo version, get the classic.

some intermediate sticks are a bit stiffer like the warrior ak27. mybauer intermediate sticks are offered in a 75 flex.

the only other option i could think of is a short hosseled standard stick/shaft system. something like a sherwood standard blade and a one95 77 flex shaft.

you could use something called twig magic and that'll reinforce a composite stick. i saw don cherry talk about it hnic. its like a foam thing you poor on the inside of the shaft and it reinforces it pretty well.

Agree with the Oggie grip.. I did put one in a 100 flex stick and it did bring it down to what felt like a 90 flex. Do remember that the oggie grip adds about 6inch length, so you have to cut the shaft itself down by about that much to get the overall length of the stick to what you want.

really? I have a senior AK27 shaft in an 85 flex and its REALLY whippy. Feels almost like a 75 flex to me. i do have a small extension in it though, so i understand it having more than 85 flex, but it definitely isn't stiff.

i have been experimenting with flexes myself, i'm the around the same height/weight.

What ive found is that different brands are stiffer than the other.

I have a Senior Bauer One95 - flex 77, cut down to about 87flex. I also have a Intermediate Easton S19 - flex 65, cut down to (supposedly) 75-77flex. Honestly the one95 feels more whippy. Its weird.

After a few more games with the s19 it has loosened up a little bit more.

So i guess use the stick a few more times? or shoot like 500 pucks on your drive way or something.

My understanding is the One95 is a mid-kick point stick while the S19 is a low-kick point stick, and low kick points will always feel stiffer.

hmm that could explain the different stiffness. I can ring shots off both of the sticks. Just that the one95 i can feel the flex a bit more than the s19.

The Reebok 10K is also stiffer then stated in my opinion. Plus it has a low flex, which as stated above, makes the flex feel different. I couldn't get used to my 10K and ended up selling it. If you can, try an Intemediate 75 flex My Bauer One95. I ended up getting one and love it. Also an R8 Whip flex starts at 70 Flex and is a great stick as well.

It's just the kickpoints decieving you.

yes and no. Since the introduction of tapered sticks they have continued to use a flex rating system that was used for standard shafts. A more accurate way to measure would be the amount of force required to flex the bottom of the shaft/top of the blade area X number of inches. It's the only way to compare sticks with differing kick points and flex zones easily and come up with a number that will actually mean something.

Don't really follow that lol. I've never tried to get into the flex arguments ie cutting x inches off a stick

i found the first AK27 (orange/black) to be really whippy which i loved. i got the newer version (black/red) and it was much much stiffer.
