I'd love to try ice hockey, but I don't have any rinks close to me...the nearest being about an hour away.

Ice is not easy to come by in some parts of CA. :(

I play both, I'm out of minor hockey as of now and am looking to play beer leagues for ice and Junior for summer (time won't allow for winter). I think I would drop out of Ice and only coach if I had the option to play in-line year round here.

Ice only, I used to play inline a long time ago but don't anymore. I should really get back into inline hockey, there's a really nice rink near me with a sport court surface and whatnot.

For now I only play roller. I feel that at my age it is too late to start and the cost around me is outrageous. I know I have it in me, but for now ill stick to roller until I feel ready.

Do you play at that place in Deerfield with the sport court, I think it's called the "Sports Mall" or something?

Roller only. Played ice a few times with the last time being about 4 years ago. Basically an ego thing-- I sucked at ice and was above-average in roller. Not to mention how huge roller is here in St. Louie (Lindewood U.)

I played at Sports Mall but it was really ghetto. People would get into fights everyday and they have icing and offsides rules that make no sense. I currently play at Palm Beach Skate Zone in Lake Worth, Florida. I feel that the rink is nicer and I know most the people there anyways.

Here is the link if anyone wants to see what it looks like.

Wow I had no idea the Sports Mall was that bad.

I've played at both the SportsMall and Skatezone. Skatezone is nicer but their entire roller hockey facility smells like a locker room.

It does smell like a locker room, now that they have an Ice Rink next to it, it is a frozen stench which I feel I am going to puke half the time, but after you get on the smell fades and its just you and your team.

Hypothetical for you guys who play only ice: if you lived somewhere where there were no ice hockey facilities but you could play roller, would you make the move to roller or just not play at all?

Also, for you guys who aren't fans of roller, what is it about it that you don't like?

I'm not trying to start an ice vs. roller war, just an intelligent discussion of why one is preferred over the other.

I would play roller probably, but only as a last resort. I just don't like the non hitting aspect, as well as the puck, and numerous other things. But I guess its hockey one way or another.

I dont like roller because the technique for skating in roller is alot different then for ice. I just rather play ice hockey and not risk having to alter my skating technique. I know some people mite be able to switch back and forth easy, but for me, on ice I would run on my skates and have shorter strides, therefore; I just stick with the ice.

If it so happend that I moved to a place with NO CHANCE of playing ice hockey, I would have no choice but to take up roller hockey.

Truthfully, people who I know who play roller hockey have ruined my opinion of it. All of the crossover kids who played roller and switched to ice have been idiots. The one or two kids who have played roller who now play ice that I like all hate roller now. I guess I just really hate how people who learn roller and then switch to ice play, the no defense, no passing, big sweeping turns instead of stopping. It just drives me nuts. I know that I don't have the best opinion of roller hockey formed, I'm sure its not as bad as I think it is, and that not everyone who plays it is a complete douche. If I had no ice rink around here I would play roller as a last resort, but if I had no ice rink to begin with, I wouldn't have started to play roller.
