Looking for a specific type of shin guard...

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for a shin guard that is not too bulky, light, and great for someone who likes to put them underneath the tongue. I've tried on the x60 and one95 and don't feel like they settle on my knee cap well. Any recommendations??

I had a similar problem with the Vapor XXXX not fitting well on the knee cap area. I took them back to the store and I got the XXV instead. There's a bit less padding but it didn't move all over the place like the XXXX did.

I went from the Nike Bauer One90s to the Warrior Projekts and find that the Warriors are a deeper fitting pad. They're about the same weight as the One90s were (light for a high end pad), but feel lighter when they're on because I think they fit deeper. I wear them behind my tongues - they're quite flat at the bottom so that works well.

Try an Easton S7, I think it was. It had a red plastic covering on the front. For me, it locked into my knee and fit very well. Unfortunately, they broke within a month of use. Good luck.

I have a pair of Stealth S9s and they are very low profile in every direction. I've had more than a few guys notice that and ask about them. Not sure if they still make them but you might want to try them out.

I've been using One90's for the last few years, and they've never quite sat right on the knee. I really liked the Reebok 6k's I tried on yesterday, might talk myself into ordering a pair. They don't have as much calf protection, but they fit deeper and I liked how the straps went through a loop back onto themselves, keeping them tighter against the leg.

I went back to my LHS yesterday and tried on some sherwood I believe 5030's and some RBK 8k's. Both sat pretty well and were pretty narrow down below to go behind my tongue. They were pretty equivalent in comfort but 8k's seem more protective. I wanna try on some lower end eastons like s7 or s9's like you guys have tried before i make a decision.

I think those Eastons they're referring to are high end models from a couple years ago. I didn't like the ST16 (too much stuff going on), but the ST6 was too cheap. The S19 or whatever was pretty decent but pricey, while the S13 had a really crappy calf wrap.

Your going to notice Bauer and Easton shins are much slimmer than Reeboks overall and will fit much better under the tongue of your skate. They are probably the best for you to go with. I wear my shins over my skate tongue hence Reeboks work well for me. I've never noticed a great difference in protection between the brands however I have heard stories that Eastons will crack on the lower shin area and Bauers tend to crack on the knee area when hit with a high velocity shot. I've never encountered these tendencies personally from either brand but I'm just making you aware that players have complained about this. Which ever brand you decide on I'm sure they will suffice for a more comfortable fit behind your skate tongue.

+1 on the S9's. I absolutely love mine. The only (minor) drawback is that they picked up a rotten smell more quickly than any shin guard I've ever owned.
