Cutting off glove padding--Is this a dumb idea?

Recommended Posts

I've got a pair of Eagle X80i gloves similar to the ones pictured below:

The white/reflective oval-shaped pad with the Eagle logo above the cuff sticks out too far for my liking. Basically its interfering a bit with my wrist movement. Looks like I could just remove that pad with a cheap seam-ripper and it would come off totally clean. Just wondering--has anyone else removed this pad from Eagle gloves? Would this take away too much protection?

I've done this on all my new gloves. I hate the extra padded long cuffs you find these days. I've never had any problems removing the pad, just cut the stitch and pull slightly and it'll come right off.

If you're not worried about getting slashed there, go ahead. They're your wrists, not mine. Otherwise, I would say get different gloves if it bothers you that much.

Maybe he likes them and/or can't get new gloves.

cut it a little from each side and see if that will give it little more movement, i do pretty much do that to all my gloves

Went ahead and gave it a shot. I am extremely pleased with the results--exactly the mobility upgrade I was looking for. I'm not really worried about protection because I wear RBK/Jofa 8k Pro elbows which, even with the slashguards removed, provide plenty of wrist protection. And, for the record, I do have a backup pair or two if things got a little chippy :) Thanks for all the replies!

Looks pretty good. Did you do it all yourself?

Thanks--yeah it was very easy. Just used my wife's cheap-o seam-ripper and the pad came right off. Probably could have done it with a good sharp pair of scissors, but I didn't want to damage any of the surrounding material.

Cuffs are much shorter now than in the past.

Keep this post handy for the attorney's defending Eagle when you sue them for your wrist getting broken by a slash...

Seems like a pretty straight-forward "Failure to Warn" case to me :) They could have easily stitched "WARNING: Cutting off oval-shaped pad may lead to wrist injury!" on those backrolls...
