When/why did bauer change holder sizes?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if anybody knows when/why/if Bauer changed the holder sizes on their skates? Right now I have a pair of 8090's in 7.5ee and a pair of Supreme 70's in 7.5, and both have 272 lightspeed 2 steel on them. I was browsing around at a new LHS today, and they had the Supreme One60's on display in size 7.5ee, but they were fitted with a shorter lightspeed 2 holder, (263 i think.) The flexlite 4.0's they had on the shelf were a size 8, and those had lightspeed 272's though

So, long story short, did Bauer start using a shorter holder, or are the sizes now smaller? ie a 7.5ee 8090 = 8.0ee supreme one60 (lenghthwise, at least)?

I didnt get a chance to try the 60's on since the store was wicked busy, but am going to go back next week after their grand opening rush dies down a bit to see how they feel....

The one90 screwed things up. The one95 series was the first with the smaller holders than what should be on the skates. It basically happened because the 8090 was wider than the one90, so those inbetween sizes went to the smaller holder on the one90. The Supreme 10.5D is supposed to be a 296 holder but is a 288, I believe the 10.5E/EE is a 296. I believe Vapors, have been following that basic guideline but I could be wrong.

so I have a question along these lines. I noticed the same thing when I got my One95's. is it possiable to remove the smaller sized holder and place a larger one on the skate after it has been drilled for the smaller size? I didn't know how many of the holes would be too close to mount the new holder. they also seem slightly off center which is another reason to change them.

I have noticed this too...I have always worn Supremes that fit tight and have had a 272 holder forever. Starting in the On95 series the holders have been 263s.

That's a pretty normal procedure.

Go to a LHS you trust and they will do it fine.

I'm using 95s now, they have had the stock holders, one size larger LS2powers, and one size larger(meaning same labeled size as the powers, holes don't match though) LS2s.

Probably not too good to the sole, but they're holding up better now with the normal LS2s than the LS2powers did

Don't blame the ONEXX, blame the 2.1 steel.

In essence, you are skating the same mm. If you have a 288mm on a 10.5 ONEXX and you had 296 mm on your 8090 with standard LS2, with the longer steel, you are still skating a 296 on your ONEXX.

That makes the 2.1 meaningless though.

If you were able to have a 296mm on a 10.5 ONEXX when you had 296 mm on your 8090 with standard LS2, with the longer steel, you will be able to skate on a 304mm(am I correct?) on your ONEXX.

If they put smaller holders on because they were able to use longer steel, it doesn7t make any sense on their side to use longer steel in the first place.

Unless, having smaller holders is better, which may or may not be true, but I've never knew of such marketing.

Smaller holder = lighter skate?

Yes, that maybe true(whether it would make a difference or not...lol), but they don't say that.

If they advertised it saying "longer steel enables for use of smaller holder, reducing weight" or something like that, that would be the case.

They clearly state that the longer steel on 2.1 enables more power/glide/whatever, so it's meant to be longer than its predecessor, right? Putting a smaller holder and keeping the blade length the same length is inconsistent with what they're saying.

The stock skate in a 10.5 came with a 288 mm holder and 8mm longer steel with the 2.1 = equating to 296.

The concept behind the LS2P and 2.1 was longer steel on a standard skate. So the advantage is only on the full sizes :)

forgive me for being a bit slow, but are you saying that the length difference between ls2 and ls2.1 steel is 8mm? if not, can you tell me what the diffence in length is, or does it vary depending on size? thanks.
