New Skate break in question

Recommended Posts

I need some help here. I just picked up a pair of CCM U+12's on Saturday, had them baked and then fitted in the CCM Fit machine. I've been wearing them around the house to help break them in and I've started to get a very sharp pain on my left inside ankle bone. What's happened is the foam has been pressed right to the composite boot on this spot from breaking them in. Is this normal? Should the foam do that?? I brought them back to the shop today and they heated them up and punched out that area a bit to help but I'm guessing that since my ankle bone is still going to be grinding right up against the composite boot with only the liner in between it will cause a lot of pain when I actually get to skate on them this Thursday. Should I just go ahead and skate in them or should I get this remedied first? I am afraid that if I go and skate in them that I might cause a bone bruise or other injury to my ankle. Any idea as to what I should do here?

Thanks,

Jeremy

The ankle foam should never displace/compress to the point where the only thing between your ankle and the boot is just the inner liner.

Do you have a rediculously huge and/or pointy ankle bone?

I cant really imagine how that would happen unless they were over-heated when baking or you were walking around in them when they were fully heated or somthing?

I'm not sure how it happened either, but I have to think that this shouldn't have happened. While I do have a pointy ankle bone, it's not ridiculous by any means. I didn't do anything more than stand in them for a half a minute or so after baking while at the shop. After they cooled down for several hours I wore them while watching tv for a while that afternoon and the next morning. I had tremendous hot spots on both ankles so the shop did a second bake which made them feel great. At this point the padding was still fine. Again I let them cool for several hours and then wore them while watching football games on Sunday afternoon/evenig off and on. Not once did I walk around with them on. By the end of the day the ankle padding was compressed right to the boot on that one spot.

Does this seem like a defect? I'm wondering if I should I bring them back to the shop to exchange/return them?

Ive had the same ordeal with a pair of Vapor XXXX's, granted mine happend over time. Your saying it hurts now, just wait to actually skate on it. If i were you i would try to return the skates and get a new pair, especially since you havent skated on them.

Tommy, I'm thinking the same thing. I can imagine having that spot rub against the ankle bone causing great pain.

Chippa13, I tightened them snug but not super tight by any means and I have no idea if standing up in them 20 minutes after baking would cause any problems. I only stood in them for about 20 seconds or so, not moving at all.

I guess maybe I'll call CCM tomorrow and see what they say I should do. Any other suggestions??

It is odd that there is little foam in that spot. Bring em back and exchange for another pair. You sound exactly like one of my customers who had the exact same issue, heck it's prob you as you describe exactly what we did to try to make them work for him. CCM has a good warranty, so getting another pair is not a problem. The other pairs we have sold have not had any issues so it could just be the pair you got.

I have been thinking about these skates...let us know how you like them. I'm narrowing it down between these and One80s.

OK, here's an update. I called CCM directly to let them know what's happened with my skates. The first words out of the customer service reps mouth was bring 'em back...that should NOT happen. He also asked me to direct the shop to call CCM because they are REALLY interested to see what happened to them since the U+ 12 is a brand new skate. I'll be bringing them back to the shop tomorrow so I really hope they have another pair in my size.

OldCY, other than this one spot the skates feel great on my feet so I'm really anxious to get some time on the ice with them. The skates seem to be extremely well made with more UFoam padding inside than in the previous U+ models. I'll give some additional feedback once I get them broken in a bit on the ice.
