Bauer Flexlite 4

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know what's the story with the Bauer Flexlite 4 skates? They look interesting and some reviews have indicated they might fit my foot well, as I've had some problems finding a comfortable fitting skate. Yet there doesn't seem to be much info out there about them and none of the shops that I know of around me (northern chicagoland) carries them. They don't seem to be marketed like the supremes and the vapors. Is it a quality skate? Any reviews?

I'm from the northern suburbs and Freds in Mundelein carries the Flexlite 4.0s, I think they are the pros actually.

Take a ride up there and try the skate on and and see if it fits you.

Try either the gunzo's in Forest Park or in Morton Grove. Morton Grove would be closer but the location in Forest Park is their main location. Jerry's would be a nice place to try as well. Give all three of them a call I'm sure they are somewhere.

Thx, I've tried them both, and Total Hockey, and nobody has em.

That's why I'm curious about them. I'd like to try them on but can't find a shop that carries them. Makes me wonder if they're a quality skate and Bauer doesn't market them much, or are the supremes and vapors just much better sellers.

read the threads wex12 posted.

They Flexlite line offers a unique fit different than the vapors or supremes. But the majority seem to have better fit in those 2 lines. Flexlites are still a top of the line skate (I personally wear a pair of 4.0 pro's and love them). They definitely fit different, but are really no 'less' of a skate, just dont have the same market as other lines...

I currently wear the Flexlite 4.0. My feet are the typical Asian (Japan and Korea) duck feet where they are wider in the toe and mid foot, narrower heel and a high instep. I got a pair of Flexlites after wearing the Supreme 5000 and the CCM U+ Pro Reloaded for extended periods of time with different skates demoed or played with trying different fits.

The skates are built off the E last but come a bit wider in the fore foot (you can feel in the front of the skate that there is a bit more space where the wear pads are just beside the toe box). However, the heel is narrower, a bit less than the vapor (pretty close). Lots of volume in the skate, much more than the current Vapors (I wore a Vapor X:60 as a test pair for a while but only could wear them after they were punched out to the point that the structure was compromised). The volume of the vapor was too shallow. The Supreme TotalONE is better in the fore foot for width but is bigger in the heel and was too sloppy, still a bit narrow in the fore foot as well (didn't get a change to punch them, just tried them in store). I have narrow ankles and the area above the ankle so I have to really crank down on the lace to wrap around for a secure fit.

The skate is soft. Much softer than the top end Supreme or Vapor, I was able to do a deep flex on my first skate on the ice. My U+ Pro was stiff and had more lateral stability but couldn't flex it forward unless I really pushed down with my knees. It's a super comfortable boot right out of the box. I find that I need a softer boot to get that aggressive stance and better ankle flexion. My skating has actually improved with the skate but I'm on the ice 3 to 5 times a week so durability is still a question as I have been on them for 6 months and I'll see how much they're able to hold up after this winter season.

Technology wise, same as the older Nike Flexlite, they haven't really changed anything. Bauer will make a new skate after next year (2012) so I'm excited to see what they come up with as they will continue the three fit stories with the Vapor, Supreme and Flexlite.

If you have a wide forefoot with a normal to narrow heel and a high instep, this skate may be good for your foot. If you have "normal" foot you may find that even the D is too wide (D in Flexlite is equal to EE Vapor and a bit wider in the forefoot than a Supreme). If you have a normal to smaller volume foot, you may have more success with the Supreme skate. Try on a Supreme skate, if you find that the heel is too wide on the Supreme and a bit tight on the forefoot, the Flexlite will be good for you. If you're comfortable with a Supreme, you can get away with that or a Vapor. Try on a U+ CL as that skate fits better than previous models and some of my friends have loved the skate. I haven't tried the CL yet as I dare not stray from the Flexlite.

Hope this helps.

The Flexlite 4.0 seems to be a common skate for people with wider feet. If you have a higher than usual arch, you'd be well served trying on the Flexlite or Graf G70 Ultra. I failed the pencil test in the Bauer Flexlite and went with the G70 Ultra since it has a normal heel and the custom insoles came included with the skate price.

The Graf 709s or CCM U+ skates seem to have a lot of volume too, but a bit more width in the heel. Probably not the best skate if you have a narrow/normal heel width

I really dont know what foot type you have. If you've got a wider foot, but a shallow or regular instep, perhaps you could look into the Easton skates. I honestly did not find a whole lot of difference in the width between the current new style Supremes/Vapors vs the Flexlites. There probably is bit of a difference in volume, but I dont think it is a lot.

A lot of the Flexlite 4.0 arch is built into the insole. The footbed itself is pretty flat. My feet have pretty low arches and fit very well in the 4.0 after having changed the insoles for flatter ones. I also have a narrow heel and wide forefoot.
