I need a composite blade that is...

Recommended Posts

I need a composite blade that is composite all the way through- if it exists? A quality one, if possible.

My problem is two-fold. I sometimes like to shape the blade somewhat with sand-paper and of course you can only go so much in areas before you hit the foam of the blade.

Also, once in a while I will play roller with the my ice stick (on a hard rubber surface) and it wears down the blade into the hollow middle part/foam.

A strange issue recently occured. I have been buying warrior sticks/blades for a while and my last AK27 blade lasted beautifully playing mostly ice and then some roller as well. Even when I retired it from the ice, I played with it on roller for as long as I could (until it was too worn down). But the middle of the blade always stayed intact for me. So, I get another one. I played with it on ice one time. On roller the next. Then the next game on ice I notice it splitting down the middle already near the heel, exposing the foam/innards already. 70 bucks for 3 times- that was my last straw. I am not saying I am in the right using it on that surface, but I expected better than that.

So the moral of the story is that I am looking for a dense composite blade. I don't care that weight will be sacrificed. I know performance may be as well, but I was wondering if I have any options. If I remember right, way back easton had the ultra-graphite, which I believe had the properties that I am currently looking for.

Thanks for the help

I think the new Easton ST Blades (black with orange stripe along the sole of the blade) are solid resin or composite and contain no foam.

Nope, I have a broken one sitting beside me. The composite is apparently graphite mixed/injected with some sort of resin, and their are 3 structural graphite ribs running from the tip to the heel in the middle of the blade, but between the ribs it's foam. Still one of the most durable blades out there without a doubt, the broken one I have is from a guy with a ridiculous slapper who used it a tonne (who gave me the stick so I could convert it into a shaft, haven't got around to that yet though), my ST has taken a tonne of abuse (including being stepped on many times) and the blade is still in perfect shape and performing like new. The composite material is extremely hard, even when I have insane skate gashes on the tape the blade itself never has anything more than the most superficial scratches you can imagine, so I assume it would hold up well on higher wear surfaces.

His ST was the 2010 one (the matte black/orange), mine is the previous model (clear coat silver/blue), but as far as I know the blades are identical, the 2010 model basically just has a new paint job.

interesting, but would it be a good blade for the OP?

It's not exactly what he's looking for, as its got a foam core, but it is the most durable composite blade I've ever used. As I said, even when I get serious skate gashes through the tape there's often not even a cosmetic scratch in the blade at all, so it'd probably hold up better than most blades on rough surfaces.

Thanks for the additional advice, guys.

I guess the most important attribute I am looking for was the 'wear' factor on the bottom. It's kind of disheartening to get 5 uses out of a composite before failing, although I will admit they are for ice or sportscourt, not roller that most play on. Wood is not an option as that splinters as quickly as the composites wear out on the bottom. ABS are a joke. That Warrior blade was on the money.

I believe when composites started coming out a brand made blades I am talking about- this was back in the early to mid 90's and they were not too good. Very flexy. I *think* the ultra graphite from Easton in the 00's had a solid core, but maybe not.

Cala- I can't really tape as the surface is sticky as it is, with the type of rubber used.

If it was indeed a Warrior HD blade that worked for you, hockey monkey still has quite a few left:

The AK27 HD blade is an especially good deal ($40), but they only have them in a lefty Vanek (lie 4) and lefty Jovo (lie 5). They have a lot more curves for the Spyne HD blade, but it's pricier and I'm not sure if the Spyne thing would react weird to wear.

Great score, Ponder! Wow, I'm a jerk- was only looking at AK's (since I thought 'HD' was exclusive to that line).

I believe I would need the ® Federov/Savard and I am sure I will find it somewhere. I see Monkey are sold out of that pattern, but now that I know they have some other HD types of blades, I'll find something.

Thanks again!

CCM U+ and Rbk 10k blades from Europe would be perfect, are superlight and pretty stiff, but still have the abs core like the old v110's.

I can use them on high-frition ( compared to ice/plastic) wooden floors for a long time, while I break down Bauer and other foam core blades fast.

They are very pricy though compared to blades in North America.
