Colin Campbell email controversy

Recommended Posts

Not sure how many of you have picked up on this so far but it is very interesting. His own comments seem to back up some of the things I have been saying for a while. Hopefully, this is the straw that breaks the camels back and he is gone soon.

Story started at www.mc79hockey.com but the site is getting slammed. You might need to use the cached page.

Good synopsis on puckdaddy.

Interesting indeed, Chadd. I share your hope that he will soon be gone after this.

... I also hope that this thread will not turn into pages and pages of: "See! That's why [insert player poster likes] got suspended for [lousy penalty]" and the like.

And am I the only one who didn't know Gregory Campbell is his son??? That fact alone seems to imply there will be some unavoidable controversy at some point.

Thats awesome Chadd! I really hope something is done about this, and it would be really nice nice to see the PA step up and make sure that there are some sort of consequences.

It's more interesting that it makes you wonder if there was a reason Campbell was picked up in the Wideman trade.

Is "controversy" strong enough. I think "scandal" is more fitting. Either way, I think Colie is in some trouble here.

Until TSN or ESPN picks up on it, it doesn't really mean anything. Unfortunately, TSN has a financial interest in not reporting the story.

And am I the only one who didn't know Gregory Campbell is his son??? That fact alone seems to imply there will be some unavoidable controversy at some point.

The fact that they cite situations where he was complaining to the director of officiating about calls made against his son, should be enough on its own.

TSN picked up one it, let's see if they are willing to hammer away at this one or if they just let it slide. Of course, the NHL stands behind him in their first comments.

Any suggestion that Colin Campbell performs his job with any less than 100% integrity at all times and in every decision he makes is way off base and just factually wrong...

"I'm a (hockey) dad venting" to the director of officiating?, common sense would say that NHL's response would be "we will look into it" but there is no sense in that office, they will try to bypass this. Hopefully some of the more respected hockey journalist will hammer on this.

"For me, it's much ado about nothing." Case closed...no?

What do you expect the guy accused of doing this stuff to say?

Geez, this is certainly going to make the NHL look legitimate to casual fans who hear about it eh? How long until ESPN picks up on this?

i'm sure there are lots of players, coaches, announcers, gm's & owners that have opinions on this and probaly have known that this goes on - but i doubt any of them will be talking

i wonder if this topic will be skipped on the season debut of the network's new live hockey show titled "NHL Overtime" on Monday at 11 p.m. ET. It will be an hour-long program and will air Monday through Thursday nights.

I found his response interesting. To summarily dismiss this story as much ado about nothing is a public relations nightmare not to mention arrogant.

the only way anything happens is if there are enough gms and owners who want something to happen.

i have a hard time believing that there are, as these emails came out 3 years ago.

no amount of media or fan pressure is going to change that.

that said, someone (justin bourne or greg wyshynski?) suggested a disciplinary committee. something i think would be a very good idea.

I really love how TSN disabled the comments section...very frustrating from a fans point of view wishing to openly voice disapproval over the way certain sections of the league are run.

But they did not become public knowledge until today. That said, they have known how he operates for years now, the only thing that may depose him is outside pressure from the media or sponsors.

not really shocking but...

Bettman expresses 'full support' for VP Campbell

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=543926&navid=DL|NHL|home

"There are a variety of unfortunate aspects to these assertions, and perhaps the most unfortunate of all is that the people making them have not had the opportunity to observe Colie's professionalism and integrity. He brings that to every one of his many duties with the NHL day in and day out, year after year. He takes his job extremely seriously, and it is a very difficult job. He takes his service to the game, the teams and the players as seriously as any human being can and he is somebody of the utmost integrity, and that's the way people around the League view him."

Bettman added that while there might be a negative public perception due to the content of the emails, "there's no basis to suggest that anything wrong, unfair, biased was ever done, because nothing inappropriate has happened with respect to supplemental discipline or any of his other duties."
