Cutting the s19 Shaft

Recommended Posts

I'm looking at grabbing a standard fitting shaft, and the s19 really caught my attention. Since I have to cut my sticks 5-6" I lose out on flex a lot with certain sticks and shafts. Does the s19 shaft's tapered 'flex zone' help to maintain the original flex (in my case 85 flex) after cutting more than a shaft with uniform dimensions?

Also how does the s19 shaft compare to the s19 one piece? I don't need a $200 stick, but the s19 OPS feels so amazing that if the shaft is anywhere near that quality I'm inclined to grab it.

For anyone who uses a light flex (70-90) that has to cut their sticks around the 53"-55" what shafts do YOU use? I like OPS's but I also like the versatility that comes with a good, standard dimensioned two piece.

Finally, for those of you using the s19 shaft, what blade brand/model do you use with it, and how does it feel? Thanks guys. Look forward to seeing what you think.

I thought the s19 shaft was just a repainted s15 shaft, I could be wrong though.

I've heard similar, but the s19 definitely has a 'focus flex zone' near the bottom of the blade that's about 1/8" slimmer for 5-6" and rounded like the elliptical part of the s19 OPS. If it works the way they 'say' it's going to work it should lower the flex point and I'd like to know if that lower flex point would mean that the flex is maintained after I cut a hunk off of the top.

You are correct. The S19 is the S15/Z Bubble shaft.

As for the other questions, everything remains the same. the flex will differ as you cut the shaft. The s19 shaft and stick are two totally different items and as far as a blade for the shaft, find your curve and go with it. Allot of people seem to really like the Bauer Supreme blades.

Well that really sucks, it means that the 85 flex will be way too high after cutting. I guess I'll just go and grab an INT shaft, probably either a totalone or a leftover r8 response.

Thanks guys. I really hoped it would havebeen worth a try.

I think it's important to clarify too that the s19 OPS and the s19 two-piece really don't have that much in common besides the names. If you do pick up the two piece after all, don't expect it to feel much like the OPS.

Yeah, I suppose it was just wishful thinking to think that there'd be similar feel to the two and a lower concentration of flex. The INT r8 shaft is 60 flex, and the int totalOne is 67, so I'm leaning towards those. I'm not too picky about the pattern of the blade but I'm leaning towards reebok's Datsyuk p38 and Bauer's p14, but I can shoot with absolutely anything.

Any other shafts tend to keep their flex after cutting?

EDIT: Keep in mind I'm only looking for standard fitted shafts.

An s19 shaft is only 50.5 in. That's 1.5-3.5 in shorter than other shafts out there.

A 77 flex Bauer T.O should be very whippy as would a whip flex standard R8.

If you want to stay with a senior shaft, carefully choosing a blade can help you cut less off the shaft. Eastons have a longer hosel than Bauers and a slightly longer hosel than warriors

I use a TO shaft 77 flex, with a Warrior Spyne blade. I cut the shaft down to 49" which left it at around a 95 flex and a total length of 55" from heel to end.

I have a 100 flex S15 shaft and I find it feels like an 85 flex ST shaft. You might be OK to cut the shaft down, it might make it play more to the listed flex.

I just had a chat on the phone with my LHS manager and he said the same thing. On the s15's and s19's the flex points are good enough to help keep a lot of flex even after cutting. Said that the 85 flex s19 feels more like a straight-walled 75 flex to start, and after the cut it'll be right around 90. It'll be about 2-3 weeks before I can afford to buy it, so when I do I'll post how it feels and how it works out with the cut and the blade I get with it. I'm only gonna get one standard-fitting shaft, so I'm definitely gonna be a picky SOB, the rest of my future stick purchases will be OPS.

They also have the totalones so I'll have a means of comparison. I'm not a huge fan of Easton sticks to begin with but what the hey why not? With all of the new stuff that's come out since I stopped playing a few years ago why not have one of everything? Lol.

On a sidenote, I'm looking at a ton of blades but the bauer p14 pattern has really caught my eye. I'm also going to grab a Koho crossover or two for outdoor/roller(that blade is the original reason why I wanted a standard shaft to begin with).

From now until then I'm more than happy to hear any opinions you guys and gals have on cutting vs flex no matter what shaft you're using. This forum has been a huge help so far, and I love hearing your advise and experiences.

Ive heard people complain about the feel of the s19 shaft. Ive messed around with one and I think that it feels way different than the ops. The totalone shaft is great though. Its around the same price as a s19 so you might want to take a look at it. You can always get a 77 flex in it and cut it down instead of getting a intermediate. Im not sure about curving a koho crossover, but on most wood blades you can curve them to match any curve.

I just wanted to point out that the s19 shaft isn't going to feel like the ops. As far as cutting goes im not sure about the shafts, but the easton ops are marked as 85 flex after you cut 2 inches off.(At least thats what my s17 said) If you are going to be picky look at all the shafts you can, even the ak27 shaft is good.

I'll check out everything for sure, the guys at my LHS ar saints and they won't let me leave with something that'll dissapoint me in the long run.

As for curving the blades It's not gonna happen. I have a wooden blade on my 08 6k shaft and it's so damn blade-heavy that it's starting to bother me. I taped a massive knob on there to counterbalance it and it's just become cumbersome. I'm gonna replace that with a composite blade, so my main blade on the standard shaft is gonna be a composite as well (probably a totalone, maybe a 6k or warrior spyne)and the crossover for the rough stuff outdoors.

The objective is to have a tapered shaft (my 08 profeel 6k) a standard shaft (totalone or s19) 1-2 woodys, a stiff OPS and a couple whippy OPS's. I used to have 5 or 6 sticks before I took my long hiatus and I'll get back to that number sooner or later. I am a firm believer of having a stick (or curve) for every circumstance.
