Determing Flex on old Bauer Woodies

Recommended Posts

So I'm new to playing and I didn't want to spend too much on a stick until: 1)I determine which handed shot I am because I'm mixed up ambidextrous, and 2) I'm 40 years old and am learning/playing for the first time.

I picked up 2 Bauer wood sticks @ the local PIAS as NOS for $12 each, a 3000 & 3090. I grabbed a lefty & righty (so far I'm pretty bad from either side of the puck).

After practicing with them for a couple weeks, I feel as though I'm killing myself trying to shoot w/ them. My technique definitely needs work and am improving on that. But what I'd like to know is what flex would these sticks be? They feel stiff as hell. I'm not ready to buy an upgrade yet because I'm still working on the technique & learning and figure these can take the beating of learning for now.

Thanks for any help or insight on the flex.

flex numbers didnt even exist on wood sticks until after composites came out. they change so quickly, but i'd say they probably start out quite high, depending on construction. play with it a few times and you will notice it start to get more flexibly/less rigid

Woodies are old school..... grab it like you'd hold it for a shot and lean into it\load it up (push hard on the shaft with your bottom hand). You should be able to flex it a few inches. With woodies it's all about how they feel and no two were identical (Kinda why we hated it when our favorite stick broke).

So I've been doing it wrong for nearly 40years?!?!?! Pray tell.... just how did us old timers get by without having a flex number printed on the shaft???

I guess you've never had to sort through a couple dozen KOHO ProFiber sticks to find a half dozen or so that "felt like they flexed the same" and became your "game sticks"? Or grabbed the blades and twisted them to sort out the whippy ones? My only real complaint (besides cost) about the new One piece units is that you cannot easily bend the blade to the shape that you want.... hmmmm maybe a side business for MLX - a blade that is heat moldable by the end user?

Maybe I'll get my daughter to take some pics while I lean on some woodies, some 2 piece sticks, and a OPS or two... You do need to know enough to not push hard enough to snap it! You are only trying to get a feel for it's flex.
