does anyone know where to get these games online, tsn.ca does not work for american viewers

I read an article somewhere that was mentioning that the World Juniors is absolutely huge in Canada but hardly registers anywhere else in the world. However, I also read an article in the Globe and Mail, Canada's "national" newspaper, that says the US is hot on Canada's heels in the junior and international hockey scene if not already taking over. Now, barring the fact that everyone on this site is obsessed with hockey, all of this seems somewhat strange that a major network in the States is not carrying all the games which seems to reflect a lack of interest in a general sense. Seems a shame considering the fact that the US is a legitimate powerhouse at hockey. Couple this with the fact that the NHL's original six teams were mostly based in US cities and I don't understand the apparent disconnect with hockey in the US in some pockets. Is it something so simple as the fact that the country is so vast and diverse in terms of climate or is more than that? No real comment here, just an interesting situation to ponder and discuss, say, over cocktails or whatnot.

It seems to me that the average American is more inclined to watch college Bowl games, NFL and NBA than Junior hockey. It may be the lack of a national junior league like the CHL in Canada that hurts the USA but there is plenty of good hockey in the USA. The top players in the USA aren't necessarily known players in the same vain as Schenn and Ellis are up here.

There are more hockey fans in the US than in Canada, then again we have 10 times the population as well so those numbers are watered down quite a bit when you start talking about percentages. You also really don't have any other major professional sporting events going on at this time of the year up there. Down here there are way too many other sporting options, especially this time of year, for a junior tournament to register. You have the final weeks of the NFL regular season, college football bowl games, marquee matchups in the NBA, the NHL winter classic and college basketball. Nobody is carrying it because the ratings would be fantastically small and they already have contracts to cover the other events.

Still the best sporting event of the year , for me. Both games yesterday were awesome. junior games ,and all international games for that matter , are more exciting than reg season NHL games. Every game means something!

And i love the fact that Gary Thorne is calling the games on NHL network. Alot of people didnt , but i really liked Thorne when he did the ESPN games. He's not over the top with catch phrases and such , but shows real excitment in his calls. He did Mario's first retirement game and it's one of my best hockey memories when he said " you gotta love it " after 66's goal

I think it all originated with our lack of options up here on TV. CBC was it for many folks for a long time and that meant Hockey Night in Canada. That ingrained hockey into our viewing culture at an early age Now , thanks to cable and satellite, we benefit from being so close to the US in terms of media and entertainment so we now get all the NFL, MLB etc. THe majority of the media we consume in terms of entertainment is US based because of the sheer volume of material and the fact that the entertainment industry is based there, again likely because of the sheer massive size of the market based on population.( A platinum record in the US is 1 million copies-in Canada it is 100,000 which takes into account the percentage aspect your mentioned). Now I am finding younger people are huge NFL fans and they will watch that rather than hockey so there is an interesting change afoot which is what some of the recent articles I have read are alluding to. The water cooler talk often revolves around NFL today. With huge interest comes huge money and obviously, that is where the networks want to be There was a funny incident for me on the way home from WInterfest that illustrated to me just how huge the NFL is. It was Sunday and the guy at the gas station asked me if I was going to the "game". I was about to ask him "what game?" when I noticed the man dressed in a bear costume with a Chicago jersey on pumping gas outside. I guess my whole point in this is that the ingrained part of Canadian culture AS A WHOLE revolved around hockey while in the states it was not as dominant across the board (I'm talking percentages here) but as mass media knocks down borders the cultural change is becoming more noticeable. Or perhaps, Canadians are realizing that they are not the only ones who are hockey mad.

I always liked hearing Gary do hockey games, plus he's a nice guy as well.

And that's why the islamic fundamentalists hate us. Oh wait, where were we?

A bit more about recent play. Anybody watching the Canada/Czech game, do you agree with the assessment? I don't think there was any head contact like TSN said, but I really dunno...

Totally clean hit. I'm not sure why the Czech guy go knocked unconscious but I didn't see any head contact. It was shoulder to shoulder from what I could tell from the replays. I think the shock of the jarring hit and landing on the ice may have knocked the Czech player out. However, the rules say any hit to the "neck area" is fair game and that MAY have been contact to that spot.

He's still my favorite hockey play-by-play announcer. I'd love to see him back doing NHL games.

It's a major both way (NA vs World hockey) you look at it. A. he didn't have the puck. B. CA player (Kassian) came from the blind side. C. A hit to the head that resulted in injury. You can say as North Americans we praise physical hockey. However that hit was straight illegal in CHL, NHL, and international rules. In world hockey perspectives, they're very protective of head injuries. In addition they don't have a history of our physical game [1+sec hit window]. Thus that will be a major pen 9/10 times. You can argue if Kassian made contact with the head or not. At that speed it's too close to call. Upon video review Kassian did make a very slight contact with the head. However even if he didn't, the ref's would have called a double for interference and rough; Upon serious injury like that, most refs would call it a major, even without the blind side head shot major penalty in effect.

Ah! Well, there you go. A nicely informed answer as opposed to my beer fuelled opinion. Thanks. I plan to steal this when the discussion comes up at work and then I will look like I know what I'm talking about. Still, two games seems harsh.

***Spoiler***

Good game by Gudbranson (2G 1A) but seriously...how does Schenn NOT get Player of the Game for Canada (4G 1A)?!?!?! Oh, that crazy IIHF! Schenn even had the GWG *LOL*

Given the suspensions from the US-Slovak game, the Canadian player got off pretty easily.
