Player Evaluations

Recommended Posts

Depends on if they are going to be shared with the player. If the player will see/hear them, then always start and end with positives and throw in the stuff they need to work on in the middle. If they aren't going to see it, be 100% honest and objective then go where that takes you.

You will be better served doing PARENT reviews. No joke, once the parents know that they are being watched too you might see less car coaching. Also will help with the family's with attendance problems or just flat out do not follow team rules.

Please expand on this a bit......

Are there any coaches that do player evaluations? If so are they positive or negative?

Just a question, are you from Oklahoma? Some guy from another OK forum asked this yesterday.

Never been to OK. But I hear that it is nice. I guess the guy has the same question on his mind. Pretty common in the forum world. The kids will def be receiving these evaluations, my goal is to only give positive feedback. Yes I know ever player isn't perfect. And I don't think parents need to be evaluated.

You need to give them things to work on as well. Only giving positive feedback isn't an evaluation, it's ego fluffing. You don't have to be hard on them, but mentioning areas where they need to improve is very important for their development as hockey players as well as people.

When I coached I liked to talk to the parents first to let them know whatI thought then would breing the kid into it. That way if the parent doesn't like what you said you don't get into a heated discussion with the player there. I would upfront and honest with both player and parent about positive and negative things. I liked to get the kids input to see what they really thought about thier skill level. Most of them are pretty accurate on thier own assesment. The ones who think they are way better than they really are usually have a parent blowing smoke up thier ass instead of being honest.

Haven't been around for quire awhile but somethings never change and CHK HRD is right about the parents. Most of the kids know where they are and just need some advice on what too work on it's the parents that cause the problems with evaluations and any improvemnet plan you might develop. I used it for off season giving the kids things to work on.

Parents are awesome... This kid on the team I help coach gets tired and cuts his shifts short/skips a shift. Today his dad complained about ice time.

Yeah, I've been on the board of my local youth org for the past year, and we've had to deal with more disciplinary issues involving parents than those involving players.

I'm with Chadd though, use the sandwich technique (google it)... compliment---things to work on---compliment... my parents are both teachers, and they swear by it, best way to give constructive feedback.
