Cagone or Blackstone X02?

Recommended Posts

Looking at buying a machine since I have 3 boys in Competitive hockey. Looking at a new X02 or possibly a used Cagone. I haven't tried the FBV yet but think it would be neat to try with the boys. My 13 yr old is hoping to start a little side business doing his team mates once he gets comfortable. The cagone would certainly be easier to use but the portability of the X02 seems attractive. Any advice from the experts would eb great.

Absolutely not on the Cagone. Once you get the hang of sharpening, you will deffinately get a better sharpen out of the Blademaster. The convenience of the spinner system as well as the option of the FBV should be enough to tip you over the the Blackstone side. Great CS also.

I'd go with the X02. But the CAG can be easily modified to handle a spinner, the new CAGs even come with that option.

As for a side business, it's against the law for anyone under 18 to sharpen skates. If your 13yo boy gets caught or even worse gets hurt while sharpening, you may be liable. If you decide you want to start the biz, then make sure you get all the applicable licenses, fed, state and local, and file the Schedule C with your tax return. That way, everything will be on the up and up.

Ummmm.... Why would it be illegal? Where do you live that it's illegal for someone under 18 to sharpen skates?

If you're doing it as a business, I can't think of any state where it would be legal.

Thanks for the feedback. we are in Canada. Students can make 7,000 per year without claiming anything to the tax man.

It has nothing to do with taxes, it has to do with operating machinery.

Chadd is correct.

Check the Provincial labour web site in your area for guidelines and labour laws on minimum age requirements for certain professions, jobs, and work sites. For example, in Ontario children under 16 (I believe) can not work in an auto repair garage.

Since we're off topic anyway, would that sort of regulation actually vary province by province up there? Seems like a pretty inefficient way to do regulations. Just curious, as I was considering relocating my business to CA at some point in the future.

Short answer is yes. There are Federal and Provincial labour laws. In Ontario employers and employees are governed by the ESA (Employment Standards Act) of Ontario, 2000.

thanks to those that answered the question. as for regulation/safety i'm not too concerned. my son plays rep hockey and box lacrosse, has a firearm, can dress a deere or moose, has a dirtbike, can drive my pick up and boat. worry of getting hurt using a little skate sharpener? not much. Cheers.
