Total One Lace Bite Issue!

Recommended Posts

I've worn custom skates for going on 20+ years now and I still get lace bite from hell every so often..... I put the pads in and let it heal and then pay more attention to how I lace them up.... It's usually a combo of skating too many games in a row or over a short time period, the socks I have on, and how I tie them up that brings it on for me.

After reading the advice you got from the Rep... I have to ask - is your lace bite still inflamed? If your feet are hurting then it can be really hard to move on and find a solution because almost everything will be painful. Go with the pads and let it heal. Once the inflammation is reduced then you can start to seriously look at the cause and your options to fix it.

The advice to move down in boot levels could be sound advice... I cannot tell you how many "kids" I see wearing top end Bauer skates (Vapor XXXX's, Vapor X60, Supreme TO\ONE100\One95\One90) but have between one and three eyelets unlaced because that cannot get any forward flex from the boots.

No sir it is still not inflamed. I am going out to investigate some pads tomorrow :)

Not a problem Jason. Yes, I've done that myself!

Is the stiffness of the boot material the most important factor in flex? Wouldn't lacing them loosely allow forward flex? What about the cut of the boot itself?

This guy here seems to have his top eyelet undone, and he might be young but he's hardly a "kid". He pots in a few goals too

When I was skating in CCM boots, I had at least one set of eyelets unlaced. I don't like tall boots and it really isn't worth a custom order if I can just leave an eyelet or two undone.

Well first of all no one said that impulse buying is bad, I’d say 70% of stuff we buy is impulse driven, it’s just most of us expect that out of those 70% that we bought actual 70% will work. Second problem is, I see quite few users post a problem, so we try to help and what happens, the next day they go out buy another top of the line skate and come back here after a week with the title “So I’m having issues...."

There is nothing wrong with spending a lot of money and looking for perfection, if you can afford it go for it. The problem is this forum is becoming more of a complain department rather then a problem solving department. That's why people get aggravated and sometimes react, because you don’t listen or not doing enough research before buying a certain product. That’s’ why a lot of stuff we buy is mostly impulse driven and no research is done a head of time.

So I will go back to my original post, you will not find a top model skate from Bauer or CCM that fits perfectly your criteria. The only top model you might be able work with is getting a custom Rbk 11k, but only if they are willing to make it without the pump bladder, then the fit will be more snug and you will have proper forward flex. If you can’t get that for a bunch of reasons then simply start buying mid range models until you find something you like.

Cheers

This is exactly, what I am looking for. Advice. That's how this whole thing started, just advice and turned sour real quick. I wanted to address another thing too before I forgot...

The rep told me that there is no problem with boot flex (as in I would have no problem and the boot is not too stiff for me). Everyone on here is telling me that the boot is way too stiff for me (resulting in lacebite)... is the rep just trying to side step a problem?

I have come up with a possible tongue solution. Again, just looking for thoughts, maybe some one has done this in the past? I'm coming out of a Vapour Shift and the tongue (I just looked at it last night) is most comparable to an x:30 (the stiff plastic lacebite guard)... anyways what I am thinking is if I put a similar tongue in the TotalONE I will have a skate that is overall way too stiff. But what about doing say a One95 tongue with the stiff plastic insert only at the last 2 eyelets and extend it slightly to my shin (just above top eyelet). My LHS said the only problem with the stiff tongues (like the x:30) is they become brittle over time and break, and then there is a whole new problem to deal with (cutting rather than lacebite)... so my idea for the tongue, will it become brittle and crack and cut... and my other concern is that its only a small piece of plastic, will it cut into other parts of my foot as the boot flexes?

Rubo,

What type of skater should be using the high end skates such as the 60's, total one's, or CL's. I hear so much about a comfortable fit being the most important thing, yet I hear very little about skating style when selecting a skate for top performance. Are smaller skaters who depend on their quickness better off with softer boots? Lower cut boots? Even if they start to break down in 6 months time through hard use? I'd be interested in your opinion.

I got mad lace bite from TotalOne skates when I had smaller Elite Laces (which I would not recommend at all). It got better with regular width laces. One way of solving it was to put the shin guard over the tongue. It feels a lot better, but I still do get lace bite from the Reflex Tongue. I skated around without the reflex tongue at all and there was no lace bite, but then it basically renders the reflex tongue useless.

After seeing this fixed, I thought I would just aske here rather than start a new thread. I see that the APX seems like a response to this. It is built without the Reflex Tongue correct? Now what if you fit the Supreme better but want a strong more traditional tongue? I am not 5'9 170. I am 6'7 310 but I love the way the total one felt on my foot. I also feel more comfortable with my shin pads tucked behind the tongue. One more thing. I do not like the one100 nearly as much. I noticed a huge difference in comfort. And since I skate 15 or 16 hours a week I want comfort. I do not want the cast feeling anymore of my one95's anymore. Plus they do not fit well if I skip the top eyelet. Do the total ones still have the cast feel when you skate in them?

Some have said they "feel" a bit softer than one95's, but like most skates nowadays they probably feel like a cast. Have you tried on 11k's?

Hey OP are you using the stock bauer insoles or something else? I found that when I had the graf insoles in my skates it just took to much volume out of the skate. Easy fix by putting the stock insole in them.

Also yes I feel the total ones are a bit softer than the one95's

I found the 11k's to be too soft.

Maybe custom's then if possible. Probably would be cheaper than retail total ones. Other than the stiffness of the 11k's, did they work for you?

Yes the fit was pretty nice! The biggest issue was that I felt like I was way back on my heels and in a hole. That and I felt slower! I know it sounds ridiculous but I felt a lot slower.

Difference in holder and boot pitch? A swap to ls2's and a profiling could work.

I am looking into custom 11k's without the pump and stiffer than retail. We shall see!

Hey I just got a pair of 11k customs I can post some pics if you want but I went with a lot of options to get the boot stiffer. stock 11k felt soft to me as well 250lbs and 6 foot. I am still breaking them in but man are they nice. Our rep wanted me to give the custom program a try and they turned out awesome. Let me know if you need any help or advice can even send you the order form so you can take a look at the options
