Time for New Shoulder Pads Advice Please

Recommended Posts

First of all I would like to say Hello to all, I am a newbie here. The problem I have is there is no Local Pro Shop near my home town. Closest one is 5 hour trip one way. Therefore, I need some advice from some of the guru's on the forum.

I am looking at Easton S19 and S13 or ST16 shoulders as well as Reebok 10K, 8K and 6K. Would like shoulders that do not hinder movement and have decent protection. Not worried about weight because I not the fastest skater at 6'2" 212lbs. I am not familur with easton products and I can not get my hands on the gear to see quality, any recomendations are greatly appriciated. I play 2 to 3 nights a week in a no check league however we all know there is some "accidental contact" at times as some games have higher intensity. If anyone has other recemdations please let me know.

I am currently using JOFA/RBK 5K older pads that have RBK on shoulder and JOFA NHL on sternum cap. The padding is starting to crack and pretty yellowish in color. Getting tired of some of the prices on ebay for JOFA and wanted to know if newer equipment is getting better.

Thanks all in advanced for your input.

I believe the Warrior Projekts have been pretty popular and aren't too bulky either.

With Warrior I am worried about quality of product. I recently ordered a pair of the Pojekt elbow pads and sent them back becaus some of the stitching

was not finished and small holes in the neopreme material that went over arm. Looking for something that will last a few years = Good Bang for the Buck.

I may consider them, I could have recieved a bad pair that may not speek for all of their products.

I should also add that I am fairly new to Hockey this is my first season playing. All the gear I bought is used. I pretty much need the protection from falling on ice and boards ect. I can skate ok, but when you put the gear on it is a dirrerent story. I am a mature player (40) and love this game.

I've been on the perpetual search for the same thing. I recently picked up a pair of the Down Low Hockey pads, which are like a padded shirt with removable shoulder caps and plastic sternum and spine protection. I've worn them for several games now and really like them. They're also about as low profile as you can get, if that's something you're looking for. There's more information on these in a thread from a few weeks ago. they are pricey though.

I've tried a lot of other shoulder pads too, before finding these. I think Easton makes quality stuff. I've worn both the ST16 and the S19 pads. They fit differently, and I actually think the ST16s gave me a lower profile with more torso protection. When I had badly bruised ribs, these worked great. I found both to be very mobile. They're just different fitting.

Reebok/Jofa are pretty much the gold standard, in my opinion, and they make excellent pads. I just found the shoulder caps to be too large for my liking, especially since, like you, I'm supposedly playing in a non-check league.

Warrior Projekts are good pads too. I didn't see any quality issues with mine. They are very light weight feeling and have good torso protection. The caps sat just a little too far out for my taste, so I ended up looking and feeling like a linebacker.

Shoulder pads are the one piece of equipment that I'm always messing with and always hoping for something just a little bit different. That's why I ended up trying a lot of different ones out, and why I spend the money on the Down Low pads. For now, those are what I'm wearing.

Since you said your are new to playing and expect to fall a lot I'd get something with decent shoulder protection. The Easton and Reeboks you mentioned would all work. The S13, ST16 and 6K would give good protection and little more mobility than the S19 and higher end Reeboks. Also I have the Bauer X40's and they have good protection and decent mobility.

I use the Reebok 4k and a teammates uses the Easton ST6, both are really good pads IMO. They have nice mobility and lots of protection for the shoulders, chest, and back. Even though they are lower model numbers, they aren't cheap in terms of protection or price really.

I think the strap stiching issue may be limited to the elbow pads. I had an issue with the stiching coming loose on my projekt elbows too and noticed that another member who was selling his pads mentioned he'd had to hand stitch sections of the strap. My Aunt was kind enough to fix the issue with her sewing machine and I haven't had any issues since and love the pads - they're light, mobile and comfortable. I also have the projekt shin pads and haven't had any problems with the stiching on the straps.

I don't have any experience with the projekt shoulders beyond trying them on in the store. I'm currently using Farrell shoulders - I also play men's league and am about your size and the Farrells have served me well for the past year. They basically feel like a thick vest when you put them on and the caps and other pieces are removable so the amount of protection is customizable. They're definitely the most mobile pads I've used. There are a few threads on the site that discuss the Farrell pads in detail.

I don't mean to hijack your thread but I was looking into getting new shoulder pads as well.

I recently saw a company making a roller hockey type shoulder protection for ice hockey and it sorta looked like something that dirt bike guys would wear.

Anyone know what I'm talking about?

I only play pick up and non-contact so I wanted something really light.

that be it

Thank!!!

I have both the Easton ST6 and the CCM U+fit09. Both are really light and are low profile. Me personally I like the CCM better just because the chest and spine pads don't stick out as much as the Easton. Both of them are great for no contact. Either one you can't go wrong.
