General skate sizing question

Recommended Posts

I'm in the market for some new skates. I've been fitted, and it seems that the proper fit is when you stretch your big toe all the way out, as much as possible, you should just be able to "feather" the end of the toe box or cap.

However, the skates I am in now, and the way I am more comfortable in the skates I am trying on, is a half size lower than they are recommending, where the toe is always up against the cap. I haven't had any issues skating like this, is there a potential problem from skating in skates sized like this or is it more a matter of go with whatever is more comfortable for you?

The bottom line is always the wearer's comfort. My toes mash into my toe caps, I'm an 8.5 wearing 6.0 Easton's. That's the way I've always liked it, although I have always seemed to buy a half size down from what is recommended to me.

I too always wore skates a bit too small. I wear a 10 running shoe (a properly fitted running shoe for running 5Ks, not oversized casual sneakers like kids wear these days) and wore a size 7 skate through high school. It just felt better to me. If I wore a larger size I felt like I was tripping over my own feet all the time.

I wear an 8 now, but they took me years to get used to. The only problem with the smaller skates is taking a puck off the toe hurts like hell.

If skates that are slightly smaller are more comfortable for you, I see nothing wrong with that. As long as its not causing any kind of pain, discomfort or blisters; theres nothing wrong with it.

I am size 12 in nike running shoes, and I wear a 9.5 skate...always have worn smaller....if it works, who cares?

Shoe size and skate size have nothing in common.

Go with what is comfortable to you. Only thing that could happen is if you get thrown back or your feet jammed into the boards, one of your toes could hit the toe cap hard and you get the dreaded black toenail.

Went over your head.....the point is, some people wear very small skates(considering shoe size), and function fine on ice. Cheers!

Just dropping in to say that I would prefer to have a half size too small than too big. Too small your toes will just be a little squished but too big you will be sliding around in there.
