31 Years Ago Today

Today is the 31st anniversary of the most important USA Hockey game ever! I still get chills when Mike Eruzione scores and the look on Coach Herb Brooks face is PRICELESS!!!! "Do you believe in miracles? YES!!"

I missed the look on Coach Herb Brooks face but the video was great! thanks.

I was actually there for one day! Did not get to see the us team, saw something like the finland/canada game (man that was a long time ago). The ice absolutely stunk. You can see places where is is just blue mush. They had the stadium temperature really cranked up high.

Saw the luge runs too. They forced you to take the bus transportation, and the olympic officials set up the bus contracts with around 5x too few buses. You had to wait in line for around 2+ hours to catch the bus to goo from one place to another. And it was COLD outside!

After all that we went looking for a room to stay, and ended up giving up by the time we were in Albany, so we just drove thru to boston and crashed.

It was a great time!

The true shame of the "Miracle" is that in today's hockey, we're pretty much guaranteed to never have something like that happen again. It isn't really because there aren't those underdogs out there but because no team will ever have the mystique of that Soviet machine.

I don't think it is a shame. I think the uniqueness of the victory is what makes it the greatest event in sports history. If this was a possibility at any time I would not be drying tears from my eyes right now. The moment is sealed in time. The members of the team hold a place in history and lore that they deserve. Herb Brooks would have a national monument carved into a mountain if this was a Canadian Team. Herb was my mite coach.....well kind of, he showed up when he could. His son was on my team, Herb he was busy coaching at slightly higher levels, U of MN. He will forever be thought of as the greatest hockey coach in American history.

It could be argued that American Hockey is still enjoying a boost annually due to this event. There is nothing wrong with any of this.
