talkintothemike 4 Report post Posted March 7, 2011 I searched other threads and could not find an answer. My son has a pair of vapor xxxx's with the LS2 holders/runners. Last week I took them to be sharpened and noticed the blade on one skate was a little loose. My LHS tightened both runners for me. When I got back home I noticed that one runner, only at the Toe end, was "lower" than the other and looked like it had dropped down when tightened. (The back of the runner was fine.) You can clearly see the height difference and the marking where the runner used to be up against the holder. I don't have the tools, so back to the LHS and they fixed it again. I gave a quick look and thought it was ok. After my son skated on Saturday, I noticed that same runner had again dropped down, or was never actually fixed the 2nd time. The runner is very tight in place, but it is clearly not in the location it should be. And only at the toe, the heel end is fine.Have any of you had this issue?? Thanks. DarkStar50 680 Report post Posted March 7, 2011 What size are the skates/holders? How long have these skates been used? Vapor XXXX are an older model now. Just curious as to how long these skates have been on ice.
talkintothemike 4 Report post Posted March 7, 2011 DS50: They are a size 3 and I believe the holder is a 230. I bought a number of sizes of the xxxx's on a clearance probably close to 18 months ago. These skates have been used 3 times per week average for about 5-6 months. We take great care of all our equipment: skates are always removed from the bag, foot liner removed, allowed to dry properly, I check for burrs/nicks on the runners, etc... and I never noticed the runner being loose before. Now we have it tight, but not aligned properly?? (I have had t-blades for 11 years so I am a little clueless about the LS2's.)
DarkStar50 680 Report post Posted March 7, 2011 Ok, a size 3 with only that much use isn't likely to have any stress on the holder built up in that short a time frame. A bigger skate on a heavier player and I thought the holder may be shot. Not likely with this info. Sorry, I can't do anymore for you via the internet.......... talkintothemike 4 Report post Posted March 7, 2011 DS50: Thanks for trying. I am hoping that it is just an issue that the runner was not properly tightened at the factory and just came loose over time, and the runner was not properly set when they were tightened the last time at the LHS. Again, I am not well educated on LS2's. My wife is headed back to the LHS today so hopefully we get it fixed. Playoffs this weekend...son is worried... Jason 65 Report post Posted March 7, 2011 I've seen a number of pairs of junior Tuuk holders where the runner does not fit properly in the holder. This may be due to the shape of the sole of the boot causing the holder to bend when being mounted. No matter what we did, we couldn't get the steel to fit nice. Then we ground the steel down in the middle because we could see that there was a point that it was rocking on. That worked the best. Really, I think it was all due to the fact that they boots didn't have the same curvature/shape as the holders being mounted. The boot appeared to be curved which would cause the toe part of the holder to bend up when it was riveted on. Not much you can do about that because it is the boot. Hopefully this isn't your problem.
talkintothemike 4 Report post Posted March 8, 2011 Jason: Did you find this to be a problem specifically with Bauer XXXX's, or just some of the cheaper skates?
reverseit 0 Report post Posted March 8, 2011 Seen this happen on all kinds of vapors. Ranging from the lowly X:05's all the way to X:60's. Only vapors though.
Jason 65 Report post Posted March 8, 2011 Actually, I recently saw this on a pair of junior One100's. I told the customer to take the skates back to where they bought them and make a warranty claim. They did go to the store and the store installed new holders. The problem didn't go away though. It was due to the shape of the sole of the boot. I don't know why Bauer's quality control wouldn't catch this and just trash the skates or fix them if possible before they get to market. I wouldn't want something like that associated with my brand. I guess when you are number one you can get complacent.
HockeySavants 5 Report post Posted March 8, 2011 My XXXX had the same issue but never affected the skating ability itself. Got Tuuk Customs and much better now.
Lostkoz 0 Report post Posted March 8, 2011 My sons size 1D Vapor X:30s do that. Looks like it has about a little less than 1mm movement at the toe. Its enough to see that there is some movement and when you push on it to seat, it moves right back to where it started. It hasnt seemed to affect his skating at all but I will keep an eye on it.
