Kovalchuk Pro to Spezza Pro conversion...

Recommended Posts

So I have been on a run of using Kovy Pro clones but am thinking of getting a few Spezza Pro's. From what I have seen/read, these appear to be a lower lie, stiffer flex and a longer length. All are good for me!!!

Has anyone done this transition?

I have tried out both curves and did try out a Spezza pro after a couple months of using a Kovalchuk pro. The biggest adjustment for me was getting used to the more significant rocker of the Spezza. Despite having a lower lie, I couldn't play it as such because of the rocker. The odd profile on the toe partnered with the rocker led me to miss passes too far ahead of me. My shooting and passing mechanics didn't need to vary much, but receiving passes and stickhandling required a little more cupping of the puck and rolling the wrists.

The Spezza pro I had was a TPS wood one from a few years back and I think more recent ones have the toe squared up a little more, but I could be mistaken. I didn't play with the Spezza too long cause the blade felt a little dead to me. I'm not sure if it actually went soft or if it was simply from the adjustment back to wood from composite. Any added benefit from a lower lie or extra length was nullified for me from the rocker and profile of the blade. Fun curve to try as a novelty, but if those were the reasons you had for wanting to try it out I wouldn't get your hopes up too, too much.

i've had both these sticks, the spezza se16's painted as s19s and the kovalchuk's dolomite DD, the only thing that threw me off at first was how kovalchuk's curve is a bit more closed than the spezza, VERY easy to raise the puck with the spezza, be careful not to hit someones face hah. ive had a lotta close calls with it. but i got use to them pretty quickly when switching, back and forth as i broke a spezza, then went to using two kovalchuk's, broke them both, and then back to the spezza, which i just broke as well hah. all 4 sticks within a time span of 2 months :P very fun sticks to play with though, ridiculous when it comes to shooting with the spezza, enjoy ;)

Awesome! I ordered three Spezza's.

I have been going between a Pro Stock Kovalchuk and a KGB Kremlin (Ovi clone). I only have used the Ovi a few times, but did notice the slap shots going fairly high. I was able to adjust to it a bit by the end of the game, but it still needed adjustment.

I am looking forward to the Spezza's. The extreme rocker, toe shape and openness is a little concerning - but the lie, length, flex, etc is all very appealing.

Where are you getting the Spezza Pro's from? I've been looking for one for a while...

the toe curve from PSHG might not be the same as the ones people are are referring to, its definitely different from the one i had which was a straight curve with a toe and no rocker. The one they have looks similar to an ovi from their vids.

He might of made it more legal in the last few years with the tip and everything being to small, just saying you might be better off trying it because the blade pattern did change a few times.

For the guys who have used the spezza, what type of player(mainly skating position and stick handling) would benefit from the rocker he uses? DO you cup it and stick handle with the heel? I have used the gionta and the biggest problem I had with it was that with my hand position and stride had me chasing the puck on the toe all day. I like to cup with the heel. I watched the puck roll out to the toe of the Gionta and that bothered me.

spezza has a very thin blade and a big toe curve

By "thin" I assume you are talking about the toe shape. The toe shape has changed I believe. Still short toe, but now appears to be NHL legal. It looks similar to the P14 toe shape.

As for the toe curve... That is what I prefer. Kovalchuk Pro's are what I a using now which is a deep toe. I even used an Ovi Pro clone and found that ok....

No he means thin. I have the Spezza Reebok 10k and if you were to look at it from above close up at the toe it looks like a knife edge from bottom to top

Did they sell out of them? Can't find any

I bought the last one on Saturday night. I got a total of 4... 3 over a week ago and ordered the last one just in case.

I have played three games with them now and am very happy with it. The rocker, pattern, etc took no getting use to from the Pro Kovalchuk. The blade feel is amazing.

As for the blade being "thin" - not true with this batch. In fact, I think it is thicker than a standard blade. It has a gritty sharkskin coating over the carbon of the blade.

I wish I eded up buying one as well, but I could not justify buying one getting used to it and then not being able to replace it. Ended up buying a gionta ak27 blade instead.

Can you post some pics? Curve has changed a bit so curious what it looks like now. They took the pics of PSHG.

If you feel like taking the pics, could you do some comparisons next to a kovy pro?

Thanks if you do!
