Helmets: CCM V08 to Easton S19

Recommended Posts

So I have been reading the LTR and other topics about the S19 Z-Shock helmet. A buddy of mine got one as well and I was impresseed with how lightweight it was. His was a medium and was waaaaay too tight for me.

I currently wear a trusty CCM V08 in size medium. It fits me well, but I am ready to move to the next level of protection. I tried to go to the CCM V10, but it did not fit me as well.

When I first started playing again I breifly used a 2009 version of the Easton S9 helmet in size XL and it was still too narrow (to boot, I wear glasses under my helmet - thin frame though).

My LHS does not carry Easton helmets (they are big on Bauer and Cascade) and I don't have time to drive 2+ hours to get to the closest shop that carries them.

Has anyone made the transition from the CCM V08 to the Easton S19? If so did you need to go up a size or two?

If the V08 fits, the S19 will not. It's not even close, they fit two very different head shapes.

S19 is a helmet you REALLY need to try on before you buy. Like all helmets they are useless if they don't fit well

Oh, I totally agree. I may just order both a L and XL. I can return which one des not fit (or both).

Spending 4 hours in the car, plus gas/tolls, plus having to pay that counties nutty tax rate is not appealing. Return shipping would be much less!

CCM helmets fit me great, tried on an S19 in both L and XL and both fit horribly. Since it's a 1 piece helmet with only the back little pad being adjustable it really only fits a specific shape of head.

I had to go the other way. I originally had the Easton S9 and I would get aweful headaches after games, then I found a CCM Vector (the v10 before it was called a v10) that fits perfectly and I have enough room for my glasses. I highly recommend trying on a helmet before buying even if it's inconvenient.

S19, you should try it on. I tried mine on for fitting at a hockey store for about an hour.

I fit perfectly in a Med. S19. it was like butter.

Without any major impacts/damage I believe the rule of thumb is that helmets can last 7 years, and if it's still in good shape your V08 should be fine protection wise, it's one of the most popular helmets in the NHL actually. You say your V08 fits you well, that's really the most important thing. If you just wanna buy something new for the sake of buying something new, any top of the line helmet that fits will do, but if you actually want better protection from concussions I don't think any helmet will be a particularly big improvement on the V08 except maybe the Cascade M11 that fatwabbit suggested.

I think he's also saying that he wants to move away from the traditional, less protective padding,

The HECC certification sticker says they're good for 7 years, no? And VN helmets especially can take a lot of impacts, I was always under the impression that with no clear damage to the helmet, and with no significant hardening of the padding from sweat they were pretty much still good. Obviously depends on how much you use it, and what kind of hits it's taken.

I think he's also saying that he wants to move away from the traditional, less protective padding,

Is there any proof that EPP is really that much more protective than dual density VN? I've always heard it was a fairly minor upgrade protection wise, even NHLers seem to be mostly still in VN helemts.

I started in an XL S9, down to a Medium V08 (just like you), and was in a large S19. I could not get it to feel right, I ended up reselling it shortly after purchasing because it didn't fit.
