Narrowing heel pocket

Recommended Posts

Im planning on tryIng to narrow my heel pocket on my vapor x40's. They fit me well and really like them, but unfortunaly i need to close up the space in my heel pocket a mm or two. I was wondering if anybody has done it and any insight on the proper way on doing it. I was thinking of heating them up slowly with a heat gun and using clamps afterwards while they cool down, i did a search and a few members mention it , but dont go deep on the subject, we need to go deeper.

Thank you

Ps. Before anyone mentions get better fitting skates and so on, they fit me well , my heel does not lift, i just feel theres a extra hair of slippage that i want to eliminate to avoid nasty blisters

Adding padding seems like the obvious choice to me?? But your idea sounds like it could be as effective, without adding anything? Would like to hear how it turns out, I could use the same, tried heating and manually forming heel area on my skates, but have not skated yet to find out if it worked......Good luck!

First of all, if you need to fix the fit of the heel, they really don't fit you well. Anything you do to try and squeeze the skate will not work for long, if at all. The link in the last post might work, at least it has a better shot of long term success than heating and pinching.

Well they do fit me well actually, i have never had a pair of skates in which my heel fills all the sPace. I dont have really narrow heels but regular to narrow. I have had numerous skates in the past years such as se16, 9k, 7k and 735, and ive always had had this problem to a minimal level. So now that i really like the performance of these skates and the comfort level, i want to make the fit as perfect as possible.

Just because you've always had the problem doesn't mean it's right.

I guess youre right, but i dont think i can find anything with a better heel lock than the se16 or the 735, and i was feeling there too abit. You think the heat molding is not a long term solution?

Maybe on a composite or "alive" skate, but not on a traditionally built skate like the vapor.

I use these: EZeeFit Ankle Boots to take up the space in the heal pocket and ankle area (helps with lace bite too). The very back of the heel is cut out so it will still sit back in the heel pocket.

well i ordered these and man do they make a difference, i wish i ordered the 3mm to make it even tighter but i opted for the 2mm because of the new red liner, so much better, if i still feel them sloppy ill just add some padding, i dont think heating up the heel of the boot was the best idea

I tried the eZee fit booties as well, same size when I was trying to make Vapors work. Maybe the 3 mm would have done the job but for me the 2mm didn't work. They held the heels for a few minutes before the slipping started, this with waxed laces cranked pretty tight. For me I don't even think it was the size of the heel, but more the way the padding is designed. My heel kind of sticks out from my Achilles so I need more padding on the back of the ankle which the Vapors don't have but Supremes do. Hope explained that correctly!

Makes perfect sense. I know exactly what you are feeling.

well ive had a bit of extra time over the week end, so i went an extra mile and had some padding added at the heel and ankle area, about 2mm id say.

now it locks my heel nicely and it feels alot tighter like i like it

Should be fine as long as your toes pull back from the toe cap in your hockey stance. Plus I'm sure that new padding will compress a smidgen over time.

I have a pair of Vapor XXXX skates. My left heel sticks out from the Achilles more than my right does (my right's pretty "flat") and my left foot is the one that has the perfect heel lock. Maybe your heels stick out even more. But good to hear that the Supreme skates work well for that. Thanks.

How did you go about adding extra padding? Did you take it to your LHS and they un-stitched the liner, slipped in more padding, and then stitched it all back up?

I saw a product at my LHS the other day that is exactly made to improve heel lock. It is a sock, with rubber spacers sewn into the sock below your ankle bones. The sock comes with 3 sets of spacers, from thin to thicker. You can customize the sock by adding inside/outside sizes to get the fit you require. The sock is specifically designed for skates, thin in the forefoot and thicker in the ankle region. The spacers sit in an pocket and are easy to remove. I tried them on and they really take up any negative space in the heel area. It felt like the skate was done up before I even laced it. The guy told me they would be $49.99 Cdn and exclusive to Source for Sports here in Canada. I'm sure there will be a US distributor. Unfortunately , I do not remember the name of the product, its suppose to be available at the end of may.

i did at a shop here that all they do is add padding to skates for pros, repalm gloves... they didnt remove anything, just added foam and some fabric on top on the existing liner, they really did a top notch job and it was 50$, i unfortunalty sold the skates since becuase it was a bit too narrow in the forefoot for me giving me pain on the bottom. i have since opted for the new model 8k rbk. and to my suprise the wider heel of my new skates lock my heel really well even without the pump, i would believe that since the general fit is better is makes a diffrence in the heel too.

if anybody is from the mtl area this is the place
