Racism in the US

Recommended Posts

Hi all

I'm a Chinese guy looking to move down to Oregon or California after I graduate. I was reading the other thread about speeding tickets and someone mentioned racism. It got me thinking. I've never experienced anything major here in Vancouver, but I'm just wondering what the racism is like in Oregon or Cali (Or anywhere else in the USA for that matter). Particularly towards Asians...

Thanks

Canada in general, but Vancouver specifically has a very high Asian population. I don't think you will encounter alot of problems moving to either or those places, but the chances of something happen would increase. That'd just be my read on it.

What part of Oregon are you thinking of moving to? I live in Eugene, its the second biggest city in Oregon. The University of Oregon is here, and there is a fairly large Asian community. Oregon in general, especially Eugene is very liberal and open minded culturally. While the majority of people here are white, cultural diversity is strongly emphasized in the community. I've never encountered any racism here, but I'm white so I guess I wouldn't. Still, I have plenty of friends who are minorities, and they've never had to deal with it. As far as police/racial profiling is concerned, last year there was one report of it happening last year, and the police had a pretty strong case actually (it was in the paper a few weeks ago). Portland is pretty similar to Eugene in this aspect aswell.

The larger the city, the more diverse it will generally be. Small towns can get a little strange anywhere in the US.

alex, i live in vancouver, but worked the last year in LA

i don't think u'll fine any racism here in LA.

and i think you should reconsider moving to CA. oregon maybe, but definatly not LA

can't see thorugh air

no clean water

the BBT here sucks ass

the chicks are ghetto or wear way too much make up

as for hockey:

an hour drive to rinks, there are less players here but the ppl who do play are actually pretty good... but nothing compared to up in canada.

the rinks ive been to dosn't seem to take hockey seriously either

and VERY EXPENSIVE too

June speaks the truth here... I'd hit Oregon or northern California way before you try your hand at LA... coming from Vanc. to LA would be culture shock to say the least, and not in a good way.

Any reason you're only considering cali or oregon?

I forgot to mention hockey in Oregon. There are a total of 4 cities in Oregon that have ice rinks.

Eugene, it has a pretty solid adult league, but the youth league leaves a lot to be desired.

Portland/Beaverton/Sherwood, two rinks, one in each suburb, both 15 minute drives from Portland, even better adult league from what I hear, WHL team, 2 Jr. B team, solid youth leagues.

Medford, smallest town out of the group, southern Oregon, not a lot of hockey, no youth league, nice rink. I'm not too sure about their adult leagues, there isn't a large hockey community, but this summer there was a game of "all stars" from the A league in Medford and the A league in Eugene and they killed us. We were made up mostly of midgets, Jr. B players, and some guys who moved here from Minnesota, Michigan, and such and they still smoked us.

You should move to Oregon. Its a nice, clean state that reminds me a lot of Vancouver. I'm thinking of going to UBC next year because Vancouver and Oregon are so similar. It'd be nice to have another MSHer in my state.

I won't disagree with anything June says except for the hour drive to the rinks. Living in Long Beach there are no less then a dozen ice and/or inline rinks within a 30 minute drive. Of course many of them stink...

As for the racism thing, LA has an insanely large asian population (to go along with the insanely large population in general). You'll likely find racism here at some point since people are generally stupid anywhere you go but I imagine it would be far less then most anywhere else in the US. On the whole I'd say I like living here but I definitely don't love living here. If I could live elsewhere is SoCal I'd move to San Diego. We thought about moving to Portland but I've never been there and the graduate school situation didn't look like it was going to work out anyway. I hear it's a really cool place however.

I went to New York last year, I didn't really have any problems. But that little "joke" about a black man not being able to flag down a cab is true. ;) It took us about 15 minutes to get one.

Yeah I remember going down to Oregon 2 summers ago with family and tons of white people stared at me everywhere I went.

Since we're on the topic, I'm an Asian Vancouverite and I've done the US coast thing for the last two summers. I found the people in Oregon, specifically Portland, very friendly. Really a beautiful state. California is nice too, San Diego is a very nice city. I don't know if I could live in LA coming from Vancouver, that city is just an immense sprawl. Funny thing is, probably one of the worst states is Washington, considering its proximity to Vancouver.

Washington does have its nice parts, although they are few and far between.

Mickz, what part of Oregon were you in? I guess it wouldn't be all too surprising if you were in one of the towns that Geki was talking about.

Are you talking about the condition of the rinks or the level of play?

I thought the A leagues in Yorba, Westminster and sometimes PCHL were good..and had some guys who weren't in the El Segundo loop anymore...

Its funny..growing up in NY..i had way longer drives to rinks then when I've lived in CA and TX..

While I wouldn't live in LA Alex..I did like Long Beach..it was more of a laid back mindset that I like....

the guys are right..Racism is everywhere...and people will be people.of course you will have to deal with us Americans who don't seem to be a favorite of the Cdn population on the whole,

thanks for the great response guys..

defenitely not LA

I was thinking around Portland or Eugene iin Oregon

I like oregon cuz it has a great climate and when i've been there, the people have been nice..but i've never had a lengthy stay there

and suburbs around Sacramento in Cali ....

or Suburbs of Fresno ... the recruiter from Hanford in particular caught my attention

I like Cali cuz the pay is a lot better than most of the other places i've looked at

the racism between african american and caucasian is pretty forefront but as an asian, how do i fit in to the heirarchy?

The pay is a lot better because its an expensive place to live. Everything there is more expensive that most places.

I'm not sure about the heirarchy, but I was up in Portland this weekend and I noticed that there is quite a large Asian population. Oh yeah, Oregon- highest minimum wage and no sales tax. I'm not so sure about the climate being great, but if you're from BC, you must be used to it.

I was talking about the quality of the rinks. My level of play isn't too high so that's not usually an issue but other then Healthsouth and Disney Ice (The Kings and Ducks facilities respectively) most of the ice rinks that aren't too far from LBC are pretty crappy. I know there are a couple of good inline facilites that aren't far however neither seemed interested in accomodating a new player in any way, shape, or form.
