Alternative skate to Easton Stealth S17

Recommended Posts

Seeking feedback on my situation...

Everything about my S17's have been great except for the lack of depth in the boot. It's ok, but for my foot I'd like something a bit deeper. However, due to a pre-existing ankle injury, I need a boot that comes up pretty high on my leg (my old Graf G35x's were ideal, but cut too low) to limit the amount of side to side movement.

Any suggestions on a skate that fits a narrow heel, comes high on the leg and has a boot a bit deeper than the S17's (Graf's are not an option here...)?

-Thanks, Todd

Have you tried the "pencil test" people talk a lot about on here? That is supposed to show if there is enough depth for your foot.

The heel is too wide in the Supremes and Flexlites. I'm interested in trying out a pair of the Reebok 11k D/AA width skates. Anybody have a pair of these they've used?

I barely fail the pencil test with the Eastons.

Reeboks are a completely different fit than Stealth. I'm assuming you've tried Synergy?

Going custom is another option

Todd, you might be in luck with the new Synergy EQ50. We have actually focused on achieving good depth in the “turn”, or middle part, of the boot based on discussions with our NHL athletes. They also value getting this dialed correctly. The height of the Synergy boot also comes a little higher than the Stealth and sounds like the ideal cut for your needs.

While the Stealth has the narrowest heel, the Synergy is pretty close and designed to comfortably lock in this area too; additionally, heat-molding this region helps form to a narrow heel even more. Sizing: the Synergy tends to run ¼ to ½ size larger than Stealth, so you may be in the same size as Stealth or the next ½ size down.

Hopefully this helps and you’ll be able to try one on yourself.

I was able to try on the EQ50 but the local store only had the 10D. A little cramped in the toes as I normally wear a 10.5D, but a good indication of fit nonetheless. The boot is about a quarter inch taller on my leg which for me is a good thing...the taller the better. A taller boot helps with the pre-existing ankle injury. Upon tightening the laces the skate was pretty comfortable and the heel look was good; I'm sure once the boot is heated and molded it would lock the heel in even more. What I liked best is how the boot wasn't overly stiff from a forward flex perspective. My S17's still feel a bit overbuilt in this area.

I also tried on a pair of Reebok 11k 10.5D's. Felt more like a slipper, but the heel didn't fit well. I had to pump the skate up 12 times to get locked in. Trying on a pair in the D/AA width would be ideal given the narrower fit on the heel. These were even softer in forward flex than the EQ50's and it made me ask the question, "How would my feet feel if I took a shot off the foot?".

An insightful experience to try them on...

I have a similar problem, i have been using stealth s17 -skates for a quite long now. Currently wearing my fourth pair, and they are pretty much worn out. I cant find new pair anywhere. I really like the heel lock and the width of the forefoot, only skate i could use in regular width. So what skates in the market has similar fit?

I'm in the same position and have found it'll be either the new stealth series (which also supposedly doesn't feel exactly the same but similar to supreme) or supreme (but my instep is lower).

I'm milking my S15's till they die a horrible death.

Same boat as yourself haha, Going to see if those Makos fit, or else I'm grabbing Supreme.

Anyhow to answer the question, I have found that Synergy, RS and Supreme are the closest.

I'd be interested in hearing if you guys have found solutions regarding the lack of heel lock that offer other skates than the s17

If you were happy with the G35 but think its too low, then just get a custom made. Graf will let you specify the height of the boot when doing custom, so you could get a G35 that is just cut a bit higher.

You may also want to try the G65/75 or the new MCI series which will have similar fits to the G35 with a little stiffer boot.
