Lower or Higher Lie?

Recommended Posts

I am trying to get the right lie for me. The tape on the heal seems to wear alot, so does this mean I may need to try a higher or lower lie?

So if my sitck is a lie of 5.5 do I need to go with a 4 or a 6? Does lower lie mean lower number or higher number?

Thanks Gents

As stated above, you may wanna try a lower lie (if you keep the same stick length). But in all honesty if you feel comfortable with the stick I wouldn't mess with the lie. It doesn't matter where it wears as long as you don't do  things (stickhandling in the air without touching the puck, missing the puck when shooting, ..).

I think only warrior offers some very low lie. Most of retail stick are 6-5.

According to brands, lies differ. I found lie 5 warrior is the same as lie 6 bauer (TO/APX).

Blade wear doesn't always necessarily indicate that the lie is wrong. Perhaps when shooting you strike the heel too much, but do everything else just right for example. As mentioned above, if your blade seems to work well and sits well on the ice while you're normally stickhandling and passing, a lie change may not be the answer to the tape wearing a certain way.

You don't indicate how long you have been playing. Players who are new to the game often wear the heel a lot because they hold the stick quite high and haven't learnt how to hold it mid shaft and skate / puck handle / shoot with it yet. You will find that as you get better and start skating with your knees bent and body lower to the ground, the wear profile on the bottom of the stick will change.

Length of the stick also impacts on the wear. So the answer isn't really clear cut, it depends on how long you have been skating, the way you skate and the length of the stick you like to use.

I think the situation where you notice the tape wear is also very, very important. If you tape right to the heel, and are playing in a game situation where you're skating around a lot without the puck, with one hand on your stick, you're gonna get a lot of heel wear no matter what. However, in a practice or stick and puck session where you're almost always stick handling, shooting and passing, then wear concentrated all at the heel would indicate that you're using too high of a lie. In such a situation the wear should be roughly mid blade. You should also simply be able to tell which part of your blade is making contact with the ice in puck handling situations if you simply make an effort to pay attention to it.
