Crunchy Palms

Recommended Posts

Right now i have bauer 4 rolls, but I've had this issue with every pair of gloves I've owned. I sweat alot from my hands, and when my gloves finally do dry, they dry ROCK solid. A few of my teammates pour water into their gloves before we get on the ice, but it just feels slippery and awkward. Ive tried the shaving cream trick, to no avail. So should i be looking for gloves with a different palm material, or is there something i can do!?

I have the same issue, but from the previous owner. You may want to look at MSH2 over Nash palms. I have applied tons of shaving cream and washed the gloves hoping it would work, but no where near as soft as my Eagle or Warrior palms.

I didn't want to tamper with the palms much on these 4 Rolls but I may just have them repalmed.

Wish I had time right now to post a complete answer, however, there are many explanations throughout MSH. Someday, I will write a blog on this, however, for now:

Digital = Natural hide made by Pittard's England

Mustang = Natural hide made by Pittard's England

Cowhide = Natural hide; several sources (in hockey, usually Pittard's England)

Clarino = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clarino

Nash = Similar to Clarino, however, different in manufacturing process

MSH2 = Microfibre

Use a product that breaks down the salts in your sweat and your palms will last longer. Funk free extended the life of my palms quite a bit and I usually have the same problem with the palms turning rock hard.

Hy Chadd

What would this be? Drinking more water, magnesium, hand sanitizing...? Btw...Too bad Funk free is not available here, and shipping is very/too expensive when I emailed them...

Greetings

Tom

Hey guys,

got this problem a few years ago as well. But it's real simple to solve: I bought QUICK n' Brite, sprayed it on the palms from the insight and the outsight till they are real soaken.Than put the complete glove together with some normal washing agent in your washing machine on a lower rpm and degree level.

Put them out and let them air dry, last around 2 days of drying.

Afterwards the palms are bright and real soft again. By the way a lot of smell will disappear as well.

Good luck and post some reviews on your trys!

Worst suggestion ever for a glove that has nash palms.

Gloves with nash palms should never be washed, simply because of how nash palms are manufactured.

Ok, so the RBK 9K and 10K pro models of the last years and as well the X60:Pro from Bauer survived more than 3 washes. And they are all nash palms.

That doesn't mean they should be washed. Take care of them properly and it isn't an issue.

Instead of pouring water into your gloves like your buddies, why not just wet your hands, put them in your gloves and work them in a bit before each skate? Might have to repeat a couple times. I do it, and while my gloves still reek, it doesn't make the palms all slimy and awkward.

My Rbk Pro stocks have nash palms and I wash them at least once a year. Even with airing them out after every single skate they still get nasty faster than any other pair of gloves I own. Its either wash them, or dont use them. They dont seem to be damaged by it at all. What about their method of manufacturing makes it damaging?

Thanks for that, it explains a lot. My Nash gloves were nice and soft and durable until about 30 games in, at which point they became incredibly hard and resistant to nearly anything softening them up (had to use pure lanolin).

Is there a difference then in the care for Nash vs Clarino?

I'm really thinking I should get my R8's redone with Clarino at George's.

The only reason my palms were crunchy were because I bought them from someone who didn't take care of them.

What I did worked great however. This worked for me and has worked on other gloves.

This takes a few days but it's well worth it.

Day 1: Pre-treat the palms

1. Apply a healthy portion of Barbasol shaving cream to each palm, one at a time

2. Put the glove on the corresponding hand and apply with the other.

3. Use a shop towel or similar to wipe off excess cream, work on the other glove.

4. Repeat each step again and allow the gloves to dry over night.

(You will notice that the palms may have softened up significantly, may also help to wet the gloves a bit in order for the shaving cream to permeate better)

Day 2/3: Washing the gloves

(You may choose to apply another coat of shaving cream to the palms, they will soften even more after 1-2 days they have been sitting)

1. Pour small amounts of laundry detergent (I used Wisk) into the gloves

2. 1 scoop of Oxy Clean in each glove

3. Small load on hot/cold setting and fast/slow setting.

4. Once washing has completed, apply more shaving cream to the palms while they are still decently moist.

5. Allow gloves to dry on their own, do not use any other methods.

Next day: Gloves should be dry, smell should be 90-95% gone, and the palms should be soft(er) again. You can continue to apply more shaving cream to maintain softness.

I have 2 pairs of Bauer Pro 4-Rolls. My 1st pair was the original model (NikeBauer) from like 2009. I coached both my sons (at least twice a week each) and played at least once a week, if not 2-3 times a week for the entire time I had them until I bought the new ones about 6 weeks ago...so like 3 years. Not only are the palms still soft (monthly washes in machine on permanent press cycle / warm water / oxy clean in gloves / heavy dose of fabric softener in machine), but they are still intact. I hold my butt end (no plug / just tape rolled over sharp edges to keep from impaling myself) right in the palm of my hand, and I've never had a pair of gloves last 1 year, much less 3...and I've never used a pair of gloves more frequently than the 4-Rolls. Thus, those saying durability will be harmed by washing really are not accurate, unless I somehow got a special pair of palms (these are retail...about the only gear I have that is retail other than my helmet and jock). I think the fabric softener has been the best for keeping the palms soft, but that's totally a guess. All I know is that washing the gloves keeps them smelling a LOT closer to new, and that keeps my wife from avoiding me like the plague for 2 days when I come home from home from the rink like she did with my old pair of Eastons...
