Convince me to move to Canada...

Recommended Posts

Winnipeg is good. Highest muder Ratio and it gets down to -50C in the winter, plus about 4 feet of snow. Our summers are the best in the country though, 35+ all summer.

You mean it's taken over that honor from Prince Rupert in BC?...

What honor is that??

I live in Rupert for now, its mild winter mild summer, and like a murder a year..... you lost me man.

It's not that bad. It never gets too hot or cold here. The weather in Vancouver is very mild. It's definately a laid back kind of town. The multi-culturalism here is immense. You can't really walk down a street without seeing people from all different races. I've really grown to appreciate this town after visiting other cities/countries. It's kind of hard to explain but the vibe here is kind of like "do whatever the hell you want and be whoever the hell you want to be and everybody is cool with it because they're doing the same". It's a beautiful city with bodies of water everywhere. The night life is awesome and all of the restaraunts are great (the large cultural population brings in great cuisine from everywhere). Not much else to say except that we also get free healthcare :D

No doubt it has changed somewhat. A population of about 10,000 at the time, and about 9000 of those were unaware that the provincial government had decided to use Prince Rupert as an "experimental rehabilitation center" for heroin addicts, who were released from Kitsalano(sp) Prison, and worked up there on a government sponsored Methadone "release" rehab program. There were at least several hundred in the program, maybe more...some of the participants told me the number was close to 1000.....blew my mind.

When I lived there in the late 60's and early 70's Prince Rupert was reported to have had the highest "per capita" murder rate in Canada....In those days Prince Rupert was like a stage town created for a wild west movie set....with huge bar fights breaking out if not everynight, then at least 3 nights a week, chairs and bottles flying. Even the police would back off breaking up these fights because the population would decide to vent there "exuberance" on the local RCMP instead of each other....talking about maybe a 100 people fighting downstairs in the Prince Rupert Hotel.

Drugs(of all kinds) were being sold openly on the bar tables in the Savoy Hotel(not condoning this, just painting the picture of what that little town was like "back in the day") and when the police showed up at the door, the patrons would all block their entrance while the drugs were safely stowed away... The town was also known as having the highest per capita consumption of alcohol in Canada, as well as the highest suicide rate....at least that was the rumour spread in local lore.

Much like the little twin towns of Stuart BC and Hyder Alaska just up the coast, Stuart with a population of about 300, and Hyder with 18, and there were three bars in Hyder..serving "snake bite" as the drink of choice.(basically grain alcohol). It was no doubt a different era...it was truly the days of the "wild wild west".

And while yes it is reasonably mild in the winter, the 220 inches of rain per year seemed a bit excessive....much of the time it never fell..just went by you horizontally.

Just a snippet of the history of your now mild mannered town..lol(which if you didn't know, was burned to the ground twice over the years during riots)...the entire area of main street was built up on stilts about 40' above the ruins of the previous versions...

Glad to see it hasn't changed much..Vancouver was always one of my favorite cities...

Yeah, I'd like to live someplace nice and warm like Florida. I hate Michigan winters (except for the pond hockey :P )

One of my friends goes to school in Tampa and he says thats sometimes girls go to class in bikinis!!?!?  is this true? lol

Damn, girls here are starting to get their Winter fat... lol j/k  ;)

No you wouldn't, trust me, lol.

I lived in Buffalo, NY almost my entire life until I moved to Florida. I hate it down here, the weather is not warm and nice all the time and it's not summer vacation 24/7 with girls going everywhere in bikini's, like people who don't live here think.

The weather down here is BRUTAL, 90 degrees, muggy, 100% humidity, nasty weather. There are never any days where the weather is nice outside except mabye for 2 days in the middle of January.

The hurricanes are just absurd, we got hit by like 4 of them in a 2 month period.

I am so fucking sick and tired of the STUPID Florida weather, it's just ridiculous. I miss snow, I miss cold weather.

-50°C, is it during the day or the night?

-50 might be a bit of an exaggeration, but I know it gets down to atlease -35 in Edmonton. But it's dry cold, and not usually windy, you don't notice it nearly as much as here where it can be -20, but the wind and dampness makes it much worse.

That's because you're in Miami.

It's much nicer in Orlando.

Most people do not realize what you mean by a "dry cold" but you are dead right..it's much easier to sustain than a damp windy cold at even say -10 C. I used to ski at -40C all the time in the "dry cold"..as long as your protect your face and have windproof clothing...no problems. For all you warm weather types....the thing about winters is you have to get out and enjoy them..once you do, you often hate to see the snow go. The spring is a time when you cannot do much until things dry up....

Alaska has the best summers on Earth but their winters have a bad rap. Still not as bad as the MN/IL once you factor i windchill.
