ankle pain

Recommended Posts

Yet another thread about ankle pain. I did some searching and didn't seem to find any solutions. So I have had these skates for a little while roughly 4 years with 2 years off of them. I recently resolved an arch pain issue and now my right skate inner ankle kills me when I go out skating. It is directly on the ankle bone. A lot of the threads I read suggested different sort of ankle pads and such. I haven't yet tried any of those or tried to wrap it with an ace bandage in fear that putting more pressure on the ankle bone would cause more pain. I should mention my ankle bone is very swollen after every skate and the skates are Graf 301. Any one have any ideas?

Maybe the skates have broken down and need to be replaced. I mean no disrespect, but the info I have read on these say they are entry level skates. I have read that even though you can bake them you will shorten the life of the skates by doing so. So this makes me think you probably just need a new pair of skates.

The pain comes from pressure on the ankle, something is rubbing/pressing against it when you skate and this is irritating the tendons around the ankle. As you say, the skates are 4 years old and they are a low model, without looking at them I'd say it's most likely the ankle pad that has broken down. It also could be that the ankle pad does not line up with your ankle and the skate needs to be repunched.

At the end of the day I'd say do yourself a favour and get a newer pair. Leaving the problem will only make things worse and you get to the stage where you can't skate at all.

well thanks for the replies that was the answer i figured but not the answer I was hoping for. Cash flow is a little tight right now. After the holiday I will probably head to the LHS and check out some skates in that $300 price range

Have you checked to see if the tongue is pushed up against the bone? I've had my skates for almost 2 years with no problems until recently when I started getting wicked bad ankle pain. I realized it was from the tongue being pushed against it more due to tying tigher.... Cut the affected side of the tongue back and the pain stopped

If you know the size you are after check out eBay, craigslist and other seller sites. For that kind of money (and much less) you can get a lightly used top end skate which can be rebaked to fit your foot. Not trying to put your LHS out of business but when things are tight (or there are 4 in the family who play ice / inline all year round and travel extensively for rep play) it gets damn expensive buying new gear all the time.

yeah I do kind of know my size (every skate fits differently) I figured if I went after the new year maybe some stuff would be going on clearance. They also carry lightly uses skates so i figured I could check there stock of there lightly used stuff. I was looking at depending on which ones feel the best supreme one 70, vapor 4.0 or 5.0, reebok 8k, vector u10's or if i find a deal online some where just jump on that. I play once a week so i don't need top of the line stuff.

Did you add a new insole or anything to resolve the arch pain issue? If you have, chances are the added thickness or support of the insole has raised your foot up a bit in the boot and it's making contact with an area that you haven't broken in. You could try removing the insole to see if you still have the problem, but of course, this will bring back the problem with your arch. If you don't have the budget for new skates right now you could try to get that area punched, as suggested by Vet88.

well the insole i added was only half of an insole under the stock one. It sits in the front of my foot just before my arch i took it out and put my foot in my skate to see if the my ankle matches up with where my ankle used to sit and it looks like it does. It is just my left inner ankle so here are some pictures.

It's a bit difficult to see in the pictures, but this skate might not be deep enough for you based on where the ankle indents are (they look a bit close to the eyelets).

Have you tried the "pencil test" to check if the skate has the right volume for your foot?

I had this issue when I switched from Bauer Vapor 15s to new Supreme one60s. After every skate my ankle bone would be way swollen, and would be extremely painful to touch.

I ended up going to an orthopedist, and he explained that its probably irritation of the nerve that runs over the ankle bone, from the skates rubbing on it.

I don't know if there was a depth difference from the vapors to the supremes, but basically what I did was take a break for about a month, then I got the round gel bunga pads, and now I skate with those on my ankles and the pain doesnt come back.

These are what I got

Does anyone know if the switch from the Vapors to the Supremes could have caused this? Id just like to know for future reference, I'd probably switch back to Vapors.

I tend to agree with Davetronz. Looking at the picture it looks like your ankle bone is rubbing on the edge of the punch out for the ankle pad, ie ankle is about 1/2" to far forward. Unless you have a really oddly shaped ankle it looks like your foot is sitting to far forward in the skate ie the skate is around a size to big?

Check your fit again:- wear thin socks, laces out, foot in the boot and push forward so toes feather the toe cap, bend forward at the ankle and then check the gap between your heel and the back of the boot. A pencil down the back should be a tight fit, a finger is a size to big.

bingo you are right they are roughly a half size to a full size too big. When I bought them I wore size 11 shoes (now I wear a 10.5 i am just as confused about this as anyone else would be because i used to wear a 12) and tried on the 10W and to be honest me being a dummy never thought to try on the 9.5 or 9. I admit i bought these before I found this board and knew as much as i know now about skate fit. I think I am going to wrap my ankle for now with an ace bandage and I have a whopping $70 in the skate fund right now. I am waiting till after the holidays and should have roughly $400 to spend on skates at that point. I will be heading to kemps to get properly fitted. I was just confused because this pain is so new. For the years before it was fine and now they are starting to hurt.
