Moving toecap on new skates?

Recommended Posts

I got lucky and was able to get a better than 50% off retail price on a new pair Bauer APX skates due to them being ordered for a local player that ended up needing a half size smaller. He put them on, walked around and said don't fit....Since I know the equipment manager for this team, he was able to sell them to me at his cost. They are a 1/2 to 3/4 size too long for me, though the width and heel are perfect so I jumped on it. He told me that he has sent skates back to his rep to have the toe cap moved back a 1/2 size(the most they can do) before and he could do so for these.

My question is has anyone done this before and what was the result? It seems like the boot would then look odd on the outsole. And I wonder if it would just be a "feel" thing for my foot or if it would actually give me the skating results I would receive by going to a proper length skate.

I never tried moving the toe cap, sounds interesting, or maybe you could go the "mlx" way, by adding inserts onto the toe cap...

My X:60s are slightly larger but my width/heel keeps my foot from moving around, so as long as you don't have that issue I wouldn't worry about it.

If anything it helps a bit from keeping toes safer from contact

I'd try to flip them, before moving the cap.

THIS

try and sell the skates privately man, and then order a pair that actually fit properly that you wont have to mess around with. then see if your buddy can order you another pair, and pocket a lil bit too. profit????

Not a good solution. That was only because they were trying to save money on their start up costs.

I'd try to flip them, before moving the cap.

This is the only reasonable solution. Since you got them at half off, you should be able to turn a profit and buy skates that actually fit.

Thanks everyone. The rep will be back from vacation next week so I'll have my guy ask about the stitching situation mentioned by Rubo. If it's just glued then I will most likely try to sell them off and go into a One100 or something slightly less. My budget was $450 going into this so if I can make a little on the APX then I might be able to get a proper fit One100.

One interesting side effect of having the boot fit snugly other than the length is I find I am curling my toes up a lot.. especially during crossovers and during front/back transitions. Kind of a weird feeling, but that toe area is roomy. ;-)
